The Vienna Capitals celebrated a 3-2 home win against Olimpija Ljubljana at the start of the 2026 calendar year. The match winner was Carter Souch, who scored all three goals for the Viennese team with a hat trick.
The Capitals got off to a good start and took an early lead in the first third on the power play through Souch (3rd). As a result, a balanced game developed with chances on both sides, but there were no further goals for the time being.
In the middle section, the guests took advantage of a numerical advantage to equalize through Marly Quince (29th), before Olimpija took the lead for the first time a little later through Marcel Mahkovec (36th). The Viennese responded promptly: Souch equalized just a minute later (37th) and put the Capitals back in front with his third goal shortly before the second break (39th).
In the final third, the home team defended compactly and only allowed a few clear opportunities. Olimpija pushed for an equalizer in the final stages and took the goalkeeper off the ice in favor of an additional skater, but the Capitals maintained the narrow lead over time. Goalie Evan Cowley showed a solid performance and contributed to the home win with several saves.
