Shock: Former VSV top scorer died far too early!

The international ice hockey world mourns Jason Lafrenière, who died at the age of 59. The sad news was confirmed by the NHL Alumni Association and caused great sympathy worldwide – including in Carinthia, where Lafrenière is still remembered today as a VSV legend.

The Canadian native of St. Catharines, Ontario, initially made a name for himself in North America. In the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) he scored an impressive 95 points in 59 games for the Hamilton Steelhawks in the 1984/85 season, which enabled him to make the jump to the NHL. In 1985 he was drafted in the second round, 36th overall, by the Quebec Nordiques.

In the NHL, Lafrenière played 146 games for the Quebec Nordiques, the New York Rangers and the Tampa Bay Lightning, scoring 34 goals and 87 points. Rangers fans in particular remember the 1988/89 season when he recorded a strong 24 points in just 38 games.

The striker also showed his class at Villacher SV. In the 1995/96 season he played for VSV and delivered one of the most impressive offensive performances in the league: 76 points in 44 games, including an incredible 40 goals.
