After the early end of the season in the ICE Hockey League, the Vienna Capitals are already planning for the coming season – the main focus is on the question of coaching. It is still unclear whether head coach Kevin Constantine will stay in Vienna, but at the same time several names of possible successors are already circulating.
A hot candidate is Mike Stewart. The former defender and two-time champion with VSV enjoys a high reputation in Austria and was also part of the national team. He played 86 games for the Austrian national team and took part in two A World Cups.
His coaching career started in Villach in 2010, where he first acted as an assistant coach and then replaced Johan Strömwall as head coach. In 2012 he went to Germany, first to the DEL2 and since 2015 he has coached continuously in the DEL. After four seasons in Augburg, he docked in Cologne for a year and has been at the helm in Wolfsburg since 2021, but was released on March 3rd.
Not averse to returning to Austria
Therefore, the 53-year-old is now available and apparently not averse to returning to Austria. It is still unclear whether the Capitals will actually rely on Stewart or stick with Constantine. However, one thing is clear: the coaching decision will play a key role in the Viennese’s sporting realignment.
