The win2day ICE Hockey League is on pause this week. But with the newly created European Cup of Nations, you can see high-class national team ice hockey from Thursday to Sunday. The Austrian national team is fighting for points at the renowned Germany Cup in Landshut, while the other three ICE nations are in action in Poland and France. The win2day ICE Hockey League is well represented: a total of 59 nominated players are in the squads of the four participating nations – the ÖEHV selection makes up the largest proportion with 21 players.
The European Cup of Nations was created to turn international play breaks into a platform for meaningful and competitive international matches. The tournament is one of the key initiatives within the IIHF’s ICE26 strategic plan. The inaugural season will take place during the traditional international break in November, December and February and will feature 18 national teams competing in groups of three or four across Europe.
Austria plays in the Germany Cup in Landshut
Austria will play in Group A as part of the Germany Cup in Landshut in November. Last season, the ÖEHV selection finished the tournament in third place. Austria’s 26-man squad for this year’s edition includes 21 players from the win2day ICE Hockey League. The opponents in the traditional tournament are hosts Germany, Slovakia and Latvia. All three teams are in the top 10 in the world rankings and have qualified for the Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina. All games in the ÖEHV selection will be broadcast live from Thursday to Sunday on ORF SPORT+ and on.orf.at.
Italy and Slovenia in action in Poland
Olympic hosts Italy and Slovenia will play their games in Sosnowiec, Poland. For Italy, the tournament is another important test with a view to the highlight of the season – the Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina. There are 17 players from the win2day ICE Hockey League in the Azzurri squad. Ten ICE players were nominated for Slovenia. In addition to host Poland, Great Britain is also represented in this group.
Hungary demanded in France
Hungary will also face strong opponents at the European Cup of Nations. In Épinal, the Hungarian selection competes against hosts France, Denmark and Norway. A total of eleven players from the two Hungarian ICE teams Hydro Fehérvár AV19 and FTC-Telekom were appointed to the national team squad.
