AlpsHL: Zeller Eisbären guide veterans with ICEHL experience to Pinzgau!

Now things are happening in quick succession – the Zeller Eisbären squad is taking more and more concrete shape. On the defensive side, those responsible are pleased to announce the next newcomer for the 2026/27 season today. Born in Vienna, Moritz Matzka is moving to Pinzgau.

With Moritz Matzka, the Zeller Eisbären were able to sign another defender for the coming season. The 29-year-old, born in Vienna, signed a 1-year contract with the Eisbären. Matzka is considered an excellent ice skater who is known for his physical game. With almost 400 games in Austria’s top and second division, “Mo,” as his teammates call him, brings a lot of experience to Pinzgau. Matzka has a good shot and can be used both in the power play and in the PK.

CAREER

Moritz Matzka was born on April 30, 1997 in Vienna. He learned to play ice hockey at his home club, the Vienna Tigers. After two years with the Lower Stars in the EBYSL, he went overseas in 2014 for a total of four years before returning to Austria in 2018. The Black Wings Linz secured the services of the then 21-year-old. He played for the Upper Austrians in the EBEL for three seasons (159 games, 3 goals, 14 assists) and also celebrated his national team debut for Austria in 2019. In the summer of 2021, Matzka joined Dornbirner EC, for whom he played a further 42 games in the ICEHL. He also played 14 times for Bregenzerwald this season, which he joined the following year after leaving the Bulldogs in the ICEHL. In his first full AHL season, Matzka promptly became one of the best Austrian defensemen in the league. In the summer of 2023 his path took him to Kitzbühel, where he was on the ice for the North Tyroleans for the last three seasons and also won the Austrian championship of the Alps Hockey League 2025 with them.

DATA CHECK

Last season, Moritz Matzka was on the ice for an average of 21:47 minutes with the Eagles, including 02:09 minutes when he was outnumbered, and 01:03 minutes in the power play. 2 goals and 8 assists, as well as +10 in the +/- rating round off his performance last year.

STATEMENTS

Neo polar bear Moritz Matzka: “Hello Eisbären family, I’m really looking forward to the upcoming season and to celebrating successes together. Have a nice and relaxing summer everyone, see you in August. Kind regards from Vienna, your new number #8.

Eisbären Managing Director Patrick Schwarz: “Moritz didn’t have an easy year last season. However, we know from the past where his strengths lie: He consistently cleans up in front of his own goal and plays with great physical commitment. On the ice he is characterized by his high level of commitment, and off it he is also an absolute model professional. We have been in contact with Mo for several years and we are very pleased that he chose us despite other options.”
