AlpsHL: Defeats for the top trio!

The start of the new year of the Alps Hockey League had a few surprises in store. HDD Jesenice, the Wipptal Broncos Weihenstephan and HC Gherdeina valgardena.it defeated the top 3 teams of the Alps Hockey League.

HC Meran/o was also close to a surprise, only having to admit defeat against Asiago in extra time. The Austrian duel between Bregenzerwald and Kitzbühel even went into a shootout, with the Tyroleans coming out on top.

Jesenice records a shutout against the league leaders

HDD Jesenice surprised league leader Sisak at the start of the year. In a largely even first third, the Slovenians took the lead. The hosts remained the more efficient team in the second half and increased their lead to 2-0. Jesenice goalie also kept his vest clean in the final section, and Jesenice ultimately prevailed 3-0. This was the third shutout of the season for Zan Us. While Sisak retains his place at the top due to the simultaneous defeat of the Red Bull Hockey Juniors, Jesenice is shortening the gap to the middle of the table.

Broncos win by Conci Gala

The Wipptal Broncos Weihenstephan also landed an upset and won 4:3 against the Red Bull Hockey Juniors. The Broncos started the match efficiently and took the lead in the fifth minute. The Red Bull Hockey Juniors had more in the starting third, but were unable to equalize for the time being. The Juniors were also the more dangerous team in the middle third and temporarily turned the game into a 2-1 lead. But the hosts equalized in the middle third. In the final section, Davide Conci became the match winner. He scored a brace within just seven minutes, completing his hat trick. The Juniors shortened the score late in the match, but were unable to force extra time.

Gherdeina lands Upset to Zell

HC Gherdeina valgardena.it is the third outsider in the league to surprise in the New Year round. The tenth-place team recorded a 3-0 shutout win against the reigning champions. The hosts from Val Gardena started the match incredibly strongly, had more of the first half and took a 2-0 lead within a minute with a quick brace. Zell put a lot of pressure on goalie Paul Hofer and Gherdeina in the middle third, but was unable to score. Zell kept up the pressure in the final section, but Hofer held on to his shutout. Stephan Deluca finally made the final score 3-0.

Kitzbühel defeats Bregenzerwald in a shootout

Adler Stadtwerke Kitzbühel prevailed in a tough New Year’s shootout against EC Bregenzerwald. However, the guests from Bregenzerwald had a much better start, leading 2-0 after just over eight minutes. In the middle third, Kitzbühel managed to score the next goal before the hosts restored their old two-goal lead. But then there was a gala performance from Mai Crnkic: The Slovenian scored a brace to equalize and extend the game and then decided the game in the penalty shootout in favor of Kitzbühel. With this success, the Eagles defended their top 5 position.

Ritten remains confident against the bottom of the table

The Rittner Buam SkyAlps remained confident as one of the few favored teams in this round and won 3-1 against the Hockey Unterland Cavaliers. But in this game too, the outsider initially took the lead. However, Ritten was able to equalize in the starting third. In the middle third, Diego Cuglietta gave Ritten the lead for the first time with his second goal of the evening. Manuel Öhler finally made the final score 3-1 in the final section.

Asiago struggles to win over Merano

HC Meran/o was also close to a surprise. In the home game against HC Migross Asiago, Meran fought its way into overtime, but had to admit defeat. Asiago got off to a much better start, taking a 2-0 lead by the 39th minute. Meran managed to score in the middle third and equalized five minutes before the end. After just 49 seconds in overtime, Ryan Valentini finally made the decision.
