While many fans enjoy the holidays, ice hockey professionals also have championship games on the agenda for Christmas and New Year. These match days are particularly attractive for the clubs as they are usually well attended and bring in important income.
Holiday games have therefore been a fixed part of the game plan for years, even if there are no top sporting duels. However, this practice always causes criticism from players. Graz 99ers striker Lukas Haudum is particularly critical of January 1st: “I’m not sure whether January 1st is really such a great date for a match day,” as he told the Crown newspaper reveals.
December 26th is also problematic because there is hardly any time for regeneration and training. According to Haudum, alternative scheduling models have already been discussed in the players’ union, but the league has not made any adjustments.
