Tomorrow, Monday, the Vienna Capitals will play their sixth game within eleven days. From 7.15 p.m. the capital city residents will have to deal with table neighbors EC iDM Heat Pumps VSV.
Tomorrow’s clash is a duel between two teams that are developing in different directions. The Capitals have collected 21 points in the last 15 games, which puts them fifth in the form table. VSV, on the other hand, only scored eleven points in the comparison period, the second lowest result of all teams. Tomorrow’s game will be broadcast as usual on sporteurope.tv.
Yesterday’s 6-1 defeat against EC Red Bull Salzburg ended the Viennese’s two-game winning streak. Around the turn of the year, the Capitals defeated FTC-Telekom (3:2 after OT) and Olimpija Ljubljana (3:2). The Caps have won five of the last eight games and the Donaustadt team are in tenth place in the table with 42 points. The fight for the pre-playoffs is fully on. There is only a four point difference between the seventh-placed Hydro Fehérvár AV19 (45 points) and the eleventh-placed FTC-Telekom (41). The next two games are of the utmost importance for the Viennese. Tomorrow our neighbors Villach, who have the same points in the table, will be guests at the STEFFL Arena. On Friday the Viennese host the eighth-placed Steinbach Black Wings Linz. The Caps power play was responsible for the Kagraners’ only goal in Salzburg yesterday. The Viennese power game ranks second with a success rate of 25.27 percent.
The previous 23 power play goals resulted from just 91 power play situations, the fewest in the win2day ICE Hockey League. The home game against VSV on November 2nd was the last before head coach Kevin Constantine took office. Since then, the Viennese have won five of their seven home games, with only home defeats against Salzburg and Klagenfurt. Caps top scorer Linden Vey extended his point streak to four games with his assist yesterday. In these, the Vienna captain recorded six goals (1 goal + 5 assists). After 32 appearances, Vey has 32 scorer points (8 goals + 24 assists).
Jérémy Grégoire, Senna Peeters, Marco Richter and Sebastian Wraneschitz will be missing tomorrow with injuries. A decision will be made on tomorrow’s matchday about whether former Villach players Benjamin Lanzinger, Christof Kromp and Scott Kosmachuk will play. Lanzinger and Kromp could be out due to illness, Kosmachuk is suffering from a lower body injury. The two former VSV cracks Sam Antonitsch and Raphael Wolf are facing their 400th game in the win2day ICE Hockey League tomorrow. Zane Franklin will play his 100th game for the Vienna Capitals on his 27th birthday tomorrow.
Yesterday the VSV lost 0:3 at the Steinbach Black Wings Linz. This meant that the Villachers, who were briefly second in the table, slipped to ninth position. Since parting ways with head coach Tray Tuomie on November 28, 2025, the Eagles’ form has been in a nosedive. Ten defeats compare to just two wins under new head coach Pierre Allard. In the last ten games, Villach only got seven points, the second-worst value in the win2day ICE Hockey League. The Eagles’ last win so far came on January 1st against bottom team HC TIWAG Innsbruck, the weakest team in the league.
The VSV Powerplay ranks in the middle of the win2day ICE Hockey League with a success rate of 21.9 percent. Villach’s penalty killing was only able to survive 75.76 percent of the outnumbered situations without conceding a goal, the second lowest value in the league. With a view to Vienna’s accurate power play, Villach should avoid penalties. Nikita Scherbak is the Eagles’ top scorer with 35 points (8 goals + 27 assists). Adam Helewka leads the team’s top scorer rating with 16 goals. The VSV has been waiting for a victory abroad since November 23rd last year. Since then there have been six away defeats in a row. The Villachers won the two duels against the Capitals so far this season.
Statement Kevin Constantine, head coach of the Vienna Capitals
“I’m an advocate of analyzing each of your games and using this knowledge to prepare for the next game. However, once or twice a season you take a game and simply erase it from your mind. Yesterday’s game is one of those. It’s important for us that we go back to our basics against Villach. At this stage of the season, every game is of great importance to us, duels against direct competitors even more so.”
