The dispute over the financing of the Klagenfurt ice rink continues to cause political tensions – and directly affects Carinthia as an ice hockey location. After the state funding expires at the end of 2025, the city of Klagenfurt will have to bear the costs of operating the ice rink alone in the future. The annual loss is around 1.2 million euros, as the ORF reports.
In a press release, Mayor Christian Scheider spoke of the state’s “irresponsible withdrawal” from financing and warned of negative consequences for youth and gaming operations. However, the state of Carinthia firmly rejected these allegations. State sports director Arno Arthofer pointed out that the funding contracts date back to the 1960s and that the subsidies had already been capped in 2016 as part of Carinthia’s financial consolidation. After a legal dispute, it was jointly agreed that the state funding would expire at the end of 2025.
Arthofer reacted particularly sharply to the mayor’s statements. The allegations were “completely made out of thin air”. The city of Klagenfurt has concluded its own agreement with the KAC, which will ensure around 1,500 hours of ice per year until 2050. Statements that children and young people can no longer play ice hockey are therefore untenable.
Despite the political exchange of blows, the ice rink’s operations are secured for the time being.
