Wörthersee Trophy: Austria ends the home tournament in third place after a 4-1 win over Norway

After a 0-1 deficit, Anna Meixner and Lena Dauböck turned the game around with two goals each and ensured a triumph at the end of the Wörthersee Trophy in Klagenfurt. This ended the season with a sense of achievement and third place, with Hungary winning the tournament. The ÖEHV selection will continue with an off-ice camp in May, and will take part in the Top Division World Cup for the first time in November.

It took a few minutes for Austria to really get into the game. Norway used this initial phase to take the lead on the first power play in the 6th minute. In the middle of the first third, Lena Dauböck, also in the power play, struck for the first time after an assist from Vanessa Picka and scored the deserved equalizer. The PWHL duo was there for Austria right at the start of the second third. Theresa Schafzahl served Anna Meixner, who made it 2:1. Before the end of the middle third, in which Norway had more chances to score overall, Lena Dauböck increased the score to 3-1.

In the final period, in which Austria created a few good chances to score, Norway took the goalkeeper off the ice. Anna Meixner used a goal win in the last minute to score the final score 4-1 in an empty goal.

For the women, this year’s national team season ends with the Wörthersee Trophy. In autumn we will be going to the Top Division World Cup for the first time, where we will face the USA, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Germany in Herning (DEN). There will be an off-ice camp in May and we are currently working intensively on further preparation for the World Cup.

Head coach Alexander Bröms: “Today was our best game in the entire tournament. We hardly had any bad phases over 60 minutes and the way we scored the goals showed that we learned in the tournament. We still have to learn to deal with the physical game better, but overall I’m very happy with the win.”

Captain Anna Meixner: “It was important for us to end the tournament with a win. Overall, it wasn’t the result we would have hoped for for the tournament. We have a lot of work to do for the future, but at the same time there were some things that we are very happy with. What’s important for us is that we are there from the first minute and show our best right away and don’t wait for the opponent and then come. Overall, it was a good week with a lot of training and a tight schedule.
