For the first time since November 1st, a full round of the Alps Hockey League is on the program this Saturday. Among other things, there will be the South Tyrol derby between Rittner Buam SkyAlps and HC Gherdeina valgardena.it. League leaders KHL Sisak welcome HC Meran/o Pircher, and EK Die Zeller Eisbären meet the in-form HC Migross Asiago in front of their home crowd.
For the second time this season there will be a South Tyrol derby between Rittner Buam SkyAlps and HC Gherdeina valgardena.it. In the first meeting on October 14th, Ritten celebrated a clear 5-1 home win. Both teams are currently on a negative streak: While Ritten has not won any of the last five games, Val Gardena has suffered six defeats from the last seven games. During the week both teams had to admit defeat in Asiago – Val Gardena with 1:5, Ritten with 2:4. Curious: Both teams showed weaknesses in the power play. Val Gardena conceded three shorthanded goals and Ritten conceded two. In terms of the table, it is a duel between the seventh place (RIT) and the ninth place (GHE).
Second game within eight days between Sisak and Meran
League leaders KHL Sisak and HC Meran/o Pircher are meeting for the second time in eight days. Last Friday, Meran celebrated a surprisingly clear 4-0 win in front of its home crowd. It was also the last game for the South Tyroleans, while Sisak has played two more games since then – a 2:3 SO defeat in Cortina and a 4:3 home win against Unterland. Meran is already challenged in Jesenice this Friday and will therefore play two games within 24 hours. In the table, Sisak has been three points ahead of her first pursuer, the Red Bull Hockey Juniors, since Thursday, although she has played two more games.
Defending champion Zell am See welcomes strong Asiago
A showdown is expected in the duel between defending champions EK Die Zeller Eisbären and HC Migross Asiago. The guests from Italy have won all of their last five games and are already in fifth place – directly behind the Eisbären, who are in fourth place, one point ahead of Asiago. In the first duel of the season in Asiago, Zell am See celebrated a narrow 4:3 away win. The Pinzgauers currently have a small winning streak of two games, but were defeated in their last two home games. Asiago, on the other hand, has won three of its last five away games.
Kitzbühel is aiming for its fifth win in a row
In addition to Asiago, third-placed Adler Stadtwerke Kitzbühel also has a four-game winning streak. On Thursday the Adler narrowly prevailed against Vipiteno with 2:1/OT. With 29 points, the Tyroleans are currently six points behind the leaders. Opponent HDD Jesenice can only dream of such table regions at the moment: The runner-up is in twelfth place with 15 points before their Friday game against Meran, but has at least won three of the last five games. In the first duel of the season with Kitzbühel, the Slovenians had to narrowly admit defeat at home with 3:4/OT – despite a temporary 3:1 lead.
Vipiteno wants to end the downward trend
The Wipptal Broncos Weihenstephan have been waiting for a win since October 23rd – seven games. On Thursday, the eleventh in the table got at least one point again in the 1:2/OT defeat in Kitzbühel. The Broncos only had to deal with EC Bregenzerwald on November 5th. Despite a 1-0 lead, they ended up losing 3-1. It was the fifth win in a row for the in-form Bregenzerwald, followed by the sixth success in Cortina. Afterwards, the 7-0 home defeat against Zell am See was the first defeat since October 17th. The Vorarlbergers are still in a strong sixth place in the table.
Unterland meets Salzburg
In the sixth game of the day, bottom team Hockey Unterland Cavaliers will face second-placed Red Bull Hockey Juniors. It is the first game for Salzburg since November 1st. The Juniors have won eight of the last ten matches and are still only three points behind leader Sisak – with two fewer games played. Unterland, on the other hand, only won one of the last ten games. In the first duel of the season in Salzburg, the South Tyroleans lost 3-1.
Cortina in Continental Cup action
From Friday to Sunday, SG Cortina, a team from the Alps Hockey League, will be in action in the Continental Cup. The Italians are fighting for a place in the final tournament in Angers, France. There they will face hosts Angers Ducs, HK Mogo (LAT) and ACS Gyergyoi HK (ROU). Cortina plays one game against each opponent. If they finish the group in one of the top two places, they will move on to the final tournament, which will be held in Nottingham (GBR) from January 14th to 17th.
