ICEHL: The VSV signs Canadian two-way defender

EC iDM Heat Pumps VSV is pleased to announce the signing of Canadian defender Scott Walford.

The 27-year-old is moving to Villach from the Swedish second division club Kalmar HC from the Allsvenskan. Walford is 1.88 meters tall, weighs 91 kilograms and is considered a classic two-way defender who has his strengths both in playing with and against the target.

Born in British Columbia in the Greater Vancouver area, Walford trained in the prestigious Western Hockey League (WHL) before continuing his career in the Canadian university system (USports). He then gained further experience in North America, including in the AHL with the Syracuse Crunch and in the ECHL with the Orlando Solar Bears.

VSV becomes the second European station

Walford was most recently under contract with Kalmar HC, where he played 51 games last season. He scored 5 goals and recorded 10 assists, resulting in a total of 15 points with a strong plus-minus balance of +14.

His qualities lie primarily in his versatility: Walford is a defender who can safely move the disc out of his own zone and exudes calm and overview in the build-up game. At the same time, he is impressive in his defensive behavior, actively seeks out duels, especially along the boards, and consistently brings his physicality into the game.

Head coach Pierre Allard is pleased with the signing:

“Scott was an absolute dream solution for us. He is a very multidimensional player. His greatest strengths are clearly in the defense, but we also see that he can set accents offensively and deliver points. That’s exactly the type of player we were looking for. He has size and physicality and doesn’t shy away from tackles. He also fits perfectly into our system and will give us a lot of depth in defense. We are very happy that Scott has chosen us.”
