The EC iDM Heat Pumps VSV is strengthening its squad with the Canadian two-way striker Brett Budgell. The 24-year-old is moving from the Bloomington Bison of the ECHL to Villach and is expected to give the Eagles additional depth and stability in the crucial phase of the season.
Budgell, born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, was a key offensive force for the Bloomington Bison last season. In 47 games, the 183 cm tall and 90 kg winger collected 37 points, including 15 goals and 22 assists, which placed him third within the team in scoring.
Budgell was also able to impress in the current season. In 25 ECHL games he had seven goals and 14 assists, a total of 21 points, three of which he scored while shorthanded. In total, Budgell has played 198 ECHL games for Bloomington, Iowa and the Newfoundland Growlers, collecting 144 points (52 goals, 92 assists). He also made 30 appearances in the AHL for the Hartford Wolfpack and the Iowa Wild, in which he had five assists; Last season he also played eleven times for Hartford and recorded four assists.
In the current season, Budgell also impressed in the “hard” aspects of the game: He won 51.03% of his faceoffs, won 52.44% of his defensive duels, blocked an average of 1.2 shots per game and collected 2.6 hits

Sports director Herbert Hohenberger is very pleased with the new addition and sees Brett Budgell as an important reinforcement for the Eagles: “Brett is a classic two-way striker who will not only give us additional depth on the offensive, but above all also do very important work defensively. We need exactly such players in the current situation in order to act more stable and make our team even more balanced. We expect secondary scoring from him, but also a clear increase in the effectiveness of the penalty kill. His versatility will help us on both ends of the ice.”
