The ICE Hockey League is attracting a lot of attention with plans for an extraordinary outdoor event (we reported). The clubs that are supposed to take part are enthusiastic.
In January 2027, a total of four games will be played outdoors at the ski jump in Bischofshofen. Plans include the Carinthian derby, a duel between Salzburg and Linz, a women’s game and a second division derby between the Zeller Eisbären and Kitzbühel.
The idea has so far met with widespread approval in the Austrian ice hockey scene. The Zeller Eisbären are particularly enthusiastic, seeing participation as a great opportunity for the club and the league. Linz is also signaling interest, but emphasizes that the project is still in an early phase.
Positive reactions also come from Carinthia. KAC President Oliver Pilloni emphasizes the attractiveness of such events to the “Kronen Zeitung”, but points out the need for close examination and careful implementation. The KAC has already gained valuable experience at two Winter Classics in Klagenfurt’s Wörthersee Stadium. However, series champions Red Bull Salzburg are still cautious.
Whether the ambitious open-air spectacle actually becomes reality depends on further planning and successful implementation.
