Austria’s men’s ice hockey national team met Latvia in the final match of the 2025 Germany Cup on Sunday in the VR-Bank Landshut Arena and suffered a 2-4 defeat.
The goals for red-white-red were scored by Patrick Söllinger – his first goal for the national team (52nd) – and Peter Schneider (53rd). The statements after the game:
Statement Head Coach Roger Bader:
“It shouldn’t sound like an excuse, at the same time it’s the truth that we had significantly less regeneration time. Sometimes that can’t be avoided in a tournament like this. As a result, the last touch was missing, the sticks went up, which then led to penalties that hurt us. In terms of fighting, I can’t blame the team. The fighting spirit, the mindset, the attitude were there. We simply made mistakes with the puck, played a little too complicated, which meant we also lost a few targets. Im We became more straightforward again in the last third. The fact that we were still at zero was certainly not justified. We had good morale when we came back, we’ll take the goalkeeper out at the end, so you have to expect that to happen in the 2025 Germany Cup. The bottom line is that six of the nine periods in this tournament were good to very good.
Statement by Peter Schneider
“I think we played a relatively good game despite the difficult conditions with the short regeneration time. We still had phases in which we didn’t have the legs and were unfocused, but I’m still proud of our team. Especially of Florian Vorauer, who did a great job today and kept us in the game. In the end we even had a chance of a point. The conclusion to the tournament is mixed. Started really badly against Slovakia in the first third and then played two very good thirds, the incredible win against “Germany, the best game in a pre-season that I have ever experienced in a pre-season and now another mixed game against Latvia. I think we can take a lot from this tournament and have learned a lot.”
