Serious bodily harm: Potential top draft pick faces up to 20 years in prison!

Canadian attacker Gavin McKenna, who is considered a promising candidate for the first pick in the upcoming NHL draft, has been charged in the USA with aggravated assault and other offenses. This emerges from documents from the district court in the state of Pennsylvania, which were reported by ESPN, among others.

The 18-year-old Canadian, who is playing for Penn State University this year, is accused of first-degree assault. This offense is viewed there as an attempt to cause serious injury or to cause such injury with particularly reckless indifference. In addition, investigators are looking at evidence of further bodily harm as well as two lesser offenses of harassment and involvement in a fight.

Following his arraignment, McKenna was released on $20,000 bail. An initial hearing is scheduled for Feb. 11 at the Center County Courthouse in Bellefonte.

A fine and/or imprisonment are possible

Under Pennsylvania law, first-degree assault is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $25,000.

State College police said the allegations are related to an incident on the evening of Jan. 31. McKenna is said to have punched a 21-year-old man in the face. The alleged victim suffered injuries that required surgery. Statements are also circulating that McKenna responded to an insult directed at his family.

The NHL Entry Draft takes place at the end of June and McKenna is listed as 1st overall. At Penn State this year he impressed with 32 points in just 24 games. At the U20 World Championships he showed what he was capable of with 14 points in seven games.
