KAC coach Kirk Furey is the focus of attention on the day of the home game against Ferencváros in two ways: the Canadian is celebrating his 50th birthday, even if he “doesn’t like to be the center of attention.”
“I don’t really like celebrating either,” says Furey, who postpones his family birthday dinner. His greatest wish: “I just want to stay healthy. Otherwise I’m doing well here in Klagenfurt,” the Canadian told the “Crown newspaper“.
Furey has been living on Lake Wörthersee for 19 years now and has long felt at home: “I can’t even call it a second home – it’s my first. My two kids were born here. The fact that I can be the first coach here is just great for me.” The contract of the coaching duo Furey/David Fischer expires after the season, and there are already talks about an extension. “Hopefully we can come to an agreement,” said the KAC coach.
In terms of sport, the focus is entirely on the duel with Ferencváros. Furey doesn’t explicitly call for a victory on his birthday, but makes it clear: “Of course we want to get three points. But it won’t be easy, Ferencváros is very dangerous on the counterattack.” Captain Clemens Unterweger underlines the importance of the game: “We have first place in the table in our own hands, but we have to score points regularly.”
