RBS head coach Viveiros on pressure, criticism and the Salzburg recovery

Before the last league game of the calendar year, Salzburg coach Manny Viveiros spoke in detail to the “Kronen Zeitung” about the recent turbulent phase at the Red Bulls. The 59-year-old Austro-Canadian made it clear that pressure is part of everyday life in top ice hockey: “Pressure is normal. Everyone wants to beat us – as a coach you have to be able to deal with that.”

Viveiros was calm about the sporting crisis a few weeks ago and the associated criticism. He hardly follows media reports and emphasized that negative headlines often get more attention than positive ones. What is crucial for him is the internal analysis and working with real ice hockey experts in the coaching team.

Salzburg has recently stabilized in terms of sport and has been unbeaten in seven games. The main reason for this is the improved offensive. “If you only score one or two goals, you can’t win a game,” explains Viveiros. We now have a better handle on the issue of punishments, without relying on loud behavior. “We see ourselves as teachers, not as shouters.”

The coach deals with disappointments quickly: after a short reflection, his focus quickly turns back to the next game. In the title race, Viveiros did not want to commit to individual competitors. The league is extremely balanced and for him “the best of all time”.

Despite the declared goal of winning the fifth championship title in a row, according to Viveiros, there is no unrest in the team. The numerous title holders in the squad know from experience that the basic round is not everything – and it is precisely this calmness that is currently a big advantage.
