After the ÖEHV selection lost 3:4 in Zell am See on Thursday, they lost 2:5 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen today. For head coach Roger Bader’s team it was the fifth defeat in the seventh preparatory game.
After the narrow 3:4 defeat on Thursday in Zell am See against our favorite neighbors, we tried again and again to get the puck deep into the opponent’s third in the return game. However, the German defenders were careful and did not let the onrushing Austrians get to the puck.
In the 8th minute, Maximilian Kastner was spot on and converted a rebound to make it 1-0 for Germany. Five minutes later, Lucas Thaler gets the puck and storms towards the opponent’s goal alone, but instead of equalizing, the hosts make it 2-0 on the counterattack through Alexander Blank.
Immediately after the start of the second third, the ÖEHV selection had two great chances to score the next goal, in the 29th. Benjamin Nissner failed to Leon Hungerecker, Austria had to continue to be patient. On the Austrian side, the focus was always on Florian Vorauer, who proved to be a reliable support. Shortly before the end of the second third, the ÖEHV goalkeeper threw himself onto the target, hit the opponent’s shin in the head and remained lying there. Vorauer finished the second third and conceded the 0:3, which Thimo Nickl unfortunately and unstoppably deflected.
To be on the safe side, Vorauer was rested for the final third. David Kickert came in for him as Atte Tolvanen missed both games due to illness. Now Austria had finally arrived in the game, and Lucas Thaler reduced the score to 1:3 in the 44th minute. Less than five minutes later, the power play was used and Marion Huber made it 2:3.
But the momentum changed after Maximilian Rebernig had to go to the penalty box for five minutes after a foul on Philipp Preto, who also had to leave the ice injured. They survived three minutes unscathed, then Ramon Schnetzer joined Rebernig and Germany used this double majority to make the preliminary decision.
In the final minute, head coach Roger Bader took out the goalkeeper. Instead of another goal, they conceded the 2:5 into an empty goal.
After a two-day break, the national team will be in Klagenfurt, where they will play their last preparatory game against Slovenia on May 9th. Paul Huber will now join us for the final team camp. Now that Gregor Biber’s season has ended in Sweden, he will probably travel to Klagenfurt on Tuesday.
