The step away from Carinthia and into the US college system was a surprise for many, but for Thomas Klassek it was the right decision. The 20-year-old from Klagenfurt swapped the EC-KAC, for which he had already completed 27 appearances in the combat team in the previous season, for a four-year scholarship at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in New York State – and is looking back on his new chapter with great satisfaction so far.
The defender studies business management at the traditional college and enjoys life on campus. “Sometimes it really feels like the American films,” says Klassek during his home vacation in Klagenfurt. In addition to everyday sporting activities, typical college experiences such as events and parties are also included.
Bad surprise at an away game
In terms of sport, RPI is currently still in a transition phase. The squad was heavily restructured before the season, many new players had to be integrated, which is also reflected in the table position. Klassek had a special experience at the end of November in the away game against top team Cornell. After a short first third, an unusual incident occurred during the break: the ice machine broke down and the guest cabin was heated to 38 degrees. “We worked up a sweat,” says the Carinthian. The rivalry between the two colleges was clearly noticeable, the game ultimately ended in a 1:6 defeat.
Klassek has also made a great impression in New York off the ice. He lives in a shared apartment with Villach striker Ian Scherzer, who is also studying business management, and two Canadian teammates. “It fits really well, we get along really well,” reports the defender.
Goal: professional career
However, Klassek still misses a small piece of home – Carinthian cuisine. “The food in the cafeteria isn’t always great. I enjoy being cooked for by my mom and grandma all the more now,” he says with a laugh. However, he remains clearly focused on the future: After completing his studies, Klassek wants to take the next step in sport and aim for a professional career.
The KAC homegrown player returns to New York on December 27th and will be back on the ice at the beginning of January. During his home vacation, he recently stayed fit with the U20 team of his parent club.
