EC Red Bull Salzburg will play the last game of the win2day ICE Hockey League before the Christmas holidays today, Sunday, and will welcome the Moser Medical Graz99ers to the Eisarena Salzburg (3:00 p.m., live stream, CheckerBande Family Day).
It’s the game of the sixth in the table against the second, both teams are currently on a successful run. The Red Bulls are pushing for their first win of the season against the Styrians, who won the first two duels of the regular season.
Initial situation
Before we start the short Christmas break, things get really exciting again. Salzburg against Graz, that is the duel between the Styrians, who have consistently been playing for the top of the table this season, against the reigning champions, who bottomed out in the autumn and are currently in the process of stabilizing themselves and fighting back. The recent four-game winning streak is evidence of this, with the Red Bulls currently in sixth place in the table. Yesterday they fought for three points in Linz and benefited from a compact team performance until the last second. Thomas Raffl only scored the decisive goal for the 3-2 win in the final minute.
The Graz99ers also know a lot about series. In the last eight games they only had to admit defeat once – at home against Ljubljana after a penalty shootout. The work of head coach Dan Lacroix is likely to play a large part in this; since his appointment as head coach in mid-November, the Styrians have only lost once in seven games. And they continue to reach for the top of the table, the gap to the leading Klagenfurt team is only two points with one less game. Yesterday in the 4-2 home win against Székesfehérvár they had to wait until the 55th minute for the decisive goal, but they were clearly the better team.
The best defensive bulwarks in the league
In the fight for Christmas points, patience is again required from the strikers, as the two best defenses meet. Graz has conceded the fewest goals so far with 61 goals, Salzburg is the second strongest force with only 64 goals conceded. In goal, Graz mainly relies on Maxime Lagacé, who has a catch rate of 92.2% in 20 games. For the Red Bulls, David Kickert has the league top score of 94% after 11 games, while Atte Tolvanen has 90.6% of shots saved in 17 games.
Manny Viveiro’s statement
“Yesterday’s win against Linz was once again based on our good defense. The defense, in cooperation with all four attack lines, will be needed again against the strong Graz team. But our form is getting better and better and we now want to score points against Graz too.”
