Shocking moment for the Swiss national ice hockey team at the Winter Games in Milan: Kevin Fiala was seriously injured in the preliminary round game against Canada and will be out for the rest of the tournament.
The 29-year-old striker suffered a serious lower leg injury shortly before the end of the 5-1 defeat against Canada. As the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation announced that further use at the Olympic Games is ruled out.
Check with bitter consequences
Around three minutes before the final siren, Fiala went down near the boards after a duel with Canada’s Tom Wilson. The Swiss remained lying down, had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher and then transported to the hospital. Immediately after the scene it was feared that the injury would be serious.
The loss is a serious setback for national coach Patrick Fischer’s team. Fiala has been one of the defining figures in the Swiss team for years and regularly takes responsibility in crucial moments.
Top performers are eliminated
The winger is also one of the top performers at club level. Both Los Angeles Kings Fiala plays a central role. Internationally, he last shone at the 2024 World Cup, where he was named the tournament’s most valuable player (MVP).
