The win2day ICE Hockey League is working on an extraordinary major project: A spectacular open-air ice hockey event at the foot of the Paul-Außerleitner-Schanze in Bischofshofen is being considered for January 2027 – this is what the “Crown newspaper“. A temporary stadium with a capacity of around 10,000 to 12,000 spectators is to be built at the exit from the ski jump.
ICE President Alexander Gruber confirmed corresponding discussions with the Bischofshofen Ski Club. The aim is to create new and unusual forms of presentation for the sport of ice hockey and to make it accessible to a broad audience. The location in Pongau offers ideal conditions for this. However, a final decision is still open as the project is currently still in the early planning and coordination phase.
The event is to be designed as an ice hockey weekend where up to four games could be played. Plans include the prestigious Carinthian derby between KAC and VSV as well as a duel between series champions Red Bull Salzburg and Black Wings Linz. In addition, a women’s game and the second division derby between Alps Hockey League champions Zell am See and Kitzbühel are under discussion.
The project is also generating great media interest: ORF, which also holds the TV rights to the ICE Hockey League for the next two seasons, is said to be enthusiastic about the idea. The Bischofshofen Ski Club also expressly supports the project. President Manfred Schützenhofer sees such major events as an important contribution to maintaining the ski jump infrastructure and to the economic revitalization of the region.
For Pongau, the planned outdoor event could represent another sporting highlight in the winter – alongside the Four Hills Tournament, the Alpine Ski World Cups in Zauchensee and Flachau and the Snowboard World Cup in Bad Gastein.
