ICEHL preview: Five games into the first international break!

Before the win2day ICE Hockey League goes into the ten-day international break, the teams can hunt for points one last time. After their derby fireworks, HCB Südtirol Alperia welcomes the next “cracker” with the Moser Medical Graz99ers.

The Vienna Capitals are up against the EC iDM heat pumps VSV – LIVE on ORF Sport+ – and could get within one point of them. Fehérvár’s interim coach Tyler Dietrich makes his debut as head coach against Pustertal.

3:30 p.m. | Steinbach Black Wings Linz – FTC Telekom
Just two days after their 4-1 win against the Vienna Capitals, the Steinbach Black Wings Linz welcome Ferencváros Budapest on Friday. It is the second direct duel of the season for both teams – the Hungarians narrowly won the first on home ice. Since then, however, the league newcomer has suffered five defeats in a row, including three after overtime or a shootout. Despite this series, Ferencváros ranks eighth with 20 points from 15 games – two points ahead of tenth-placed Linz. After the success against the Capitals, the Upper Austrians go into the game with an unchanged line-up. For the guests, Braeden Shaw (11 goals, 9 assists) and Tyler Coulter (5 goals, 10 assists) lead the internal scorers and are among the key players in the Hungarians’ offensive game.

4:00 p.m. | Pioneers Vorarlberg – EC-KAC
The EC-KAC travels to Vorarlberg with a big chest: the Klagenfurters won eight wins from nine games in October and are currently in fourth place in the table with 22 points out of a possible 27 – five points behind leader Ljubljana. With an average goals conceded of 2.36 and recently increased offensive efficiency, the Red Jackets are currently one of the strongest teams in the league. They also want to defend their series of six away wins in a row in Feldkirch.

The Pioneers Vorarlberg celebrated their third win of the season on Wednesday with a 3-2 win after extra time against champions Salzburg, but are still at the bottom of the table. Head coach Johannes Nygård’s team is still looking for consistency, especially on offense: with an average of 1.87 goals per game and a power play rate of 8.9 percent, the Vorarlbergers have the weakest values in the league. Historically, the record speaks clearly for the KAC, which has won the last six duels in Feldkirch.

5:30 p.m. | Vienna Capitals – EC iDM heat pumps VSV | LIVE on ORF Sport+
In the last game before the international break, the Vienna Capitals will host EC iDM Heat Pumps VSV on Sunday. With a win, the Viennese could move within one point of Villach, currently in seventh place. While the Capitals suffered their first defeat under interim coach Fabian Scholz in Linz on Friday, the team had previously achieved two successes in a row. Jérémy Grégoire scored in each of his three games of the season so far, captain Linden Vey and Mitch Hults also scored consistently. In addition, the Viennese special teams are among the best in the league (third place each).

The VSV recently suffered a narrow 1:2 defeat in Innsbruck and lost three of its last four games. With 22 points after 14 games, Villach is currently in seventh place. Top scorer is Nikita Scherbak with 14 points, tied with Kevin Hancock, who also scored six goals. The Carinthians recently showed weaknesses in the outnumbered game, which is the lowest in the league with a success rate of 66.7 percent.

6:00 p.m. | HCB Südtirol Alperia – Moser Medical Graz99ers
After the gala derby performance by HCB Südtirol Alperia, the next home game is already waiting on Sunday. The South Tyroleans want to take the momentum from the historic 9:1 with them against the Moser Medical Graz99ers. This was the fourth win in the last five games for Bozen. This meant the Foxes climbed to third place in the table. New signing Cole Schneiter was particularly impressive in the first phase of the regular season and has eight goals and ten assists.

After head coach Harry Lange left, the Moser Medical Graz99ers have a record of two wins and one defeat. The Graz team only had to admit defeat against HC Falkensteiner Pustertal under the interim leadership of Philipp Pinter. Most recently they celebrated a 4:3 overtime victory over FTC-Telekom. In the table, the Styrians are only two points behind the Foxes. With a complete success on Sunday they could spend the international break ahead of the South Tyroleans.

6:00 p.m. | HC Falkensteiner Pustertal – Hydro Fehérvár AV19
For HC Falkensteiner Pustertal it is important to quickly shake off the significant derby defeat against Bozen and build on their previous performances. Leaders Ljubljana are (before Saturday’s encounter) just one point ahead of Wolves, who had five wins in a row before Friday’s defeat. In the first duel of the season, the “Puschtra” won 3-1 in Fehérvár.

However, the Hungarians have now made a coaching change. After a mixed start to the season, David Kiss was replaced by interim coach Tyler Dietrich, who is now making his head coaching debut for Fehérvár. A detailed interview with Dietrich, which was given before the start of the season, can be found here.
