Austria’s U18 men’s ice hockey national team is completing a four-nation tournament in Budapest during the IIHF’s November break. There was a confident 4-1 win in the opening match against Slovenia. The goals for the ÖEHV selection were scored by Emil Wagner (19th/PP1), Ferdinand Humer (39th), Vitus Plank (46th) and Paul Vaschauner (60th/EN). On Friday, head coach Peter Schweda’s team continues against hosts Hungary from 6:30 p.m.
Austria took the lead late in a hard-fought first third against Risi. Emil Wagner was in the right slot after a rebound when he was outnumbered and scored to make it 1-0 (19th). In the second third, Austria had two outnumbered games, in the first the ÖEHV cracks were still unscathed. Two minutes after halftime of the game, Tim Koštomaj Valenčak made it 1-1 for Slovenia with a powerful shot from the advantage (32′).
Red-White-Red found the perfect answer in the second period: Ferdinand Humer moved in front of the opposing goal and scored from the slot to take the lead again to make it 2-1 (39th). Almost six minutes had passed in the final third when Vitus Plank launched a remarkable solo down the left side and made it 3-1 for Austria (46′).
Austria played the match down dryly, Paul Vaschauner made everything clear with an Emptynet goal 41 seconds before the end (60th). The Slovenians will compete in the IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship Division I, Group A in April 2026 in Krynica, Poland. Austria wants to be promoted to this division again at the World Cup in Tallinn at the end of April 2026.
