Ferencváros arrived with a lot of self-confidence – the Hungarians had celebrated a 3-1 win in Innsbruck on Friday. While the Pioneers had suffered a bitter 1:7 defeat in Bolzano the evening before.
Despite chances on both sides, the first third remained goalless. After the restart, Budapest initially took command. The guests established themselves in the attacking third several times, but Pioneers goalie Alex Caffi and once the bar prevented a goal being conceded. As the middle period progressed, the home team got into the game better and came close to taking the lead several times, but FTC goalkeeper Kristóf Nagy also made strong saves. So after 40 minutes it was still 0-0 going into the second break.
Early in the third period, Milan Horváth broke the spell with a shot into the far corner. Only 39 seconds later, Ferenc Laskawy scored a double strike after a nice combination – Caffi was still there, but the disc still jumped over the line. The Pioneers didn’t give up and in the 53rd minute on the power play, with another penalty called, Nathan Burke reduced the score to 1:2. Afterwards, the bottom team pushed for an equalizer, but were unable to capitalize on their chances. Shortly before the end, István Sofron made the decision with an empty netter.
