The Moser Medical Graz99ers showed one of the strongest performances of the season so far in the 3-2 away win after a penalty shootout against HCB Südtirol Alperia – but had to pay dearly for the success. Four players left injured during the game: Frank Hora, Lenz Moosbrugger, Nick Swaney and goalie Maxime Lagacé.
Four cracks are injured – Lagacé has to come off the ice at the finish
What started as an intense, fast-paced game developed into a real show of strength for the Styrians. Defender Frank Hora and striker Lenz Moosbrugger were hit in the middle section, both of whom had to go to the locker room early. Shortly afterwards, Nick Swaney was also affected, as he was no longer able to get on the ice after an unfortunate collision.
Shortly before the end of overtime, goalie Maxime Lagacé provided the next shocking moment: The Canadian had to leave the ice injured with 1:38 minutes left and was replaced by Nico Wieser. Despite the personnel setbacks, the 99ers showed great morale and fought their way into the penalty shootout.
Haudum and Vela secure victory
There, the Graz team showed strong nerves: Marcus Vela and Lukas Haudum confidently converted their attempts and secured the team the extra point – a well-deserved reward for a self-sacrificing performance in Bolzano.
The 99ers had previously dominated for long periods and had temporarily taken a 3-1 lead with goals from Paul Huber, Lukas Kainz and Michael Schiechl. It was only in the final phase that the home team managed to equalize through Pollock.
Expensive victory – precise diagnoses follow
It is not yet clear how serious the injuries of the four 99ers players are. A detailed medical examination will follow in the coming days. At least the international break is helping the people of Graz. The Styrians’ next game will not take place until November 14th against EC Red Bull Salzburg.
