Clubs on the verge of extinction? – Ice rink closures exacerbate crisis

In several Austrian cities, ice rinks have recently been closed or their operations have been severely restricted. High energy costs and savings measures are putting a massive strain on operators. The consequences not only affect professional sports, but especially young and popular sports.

For example, the ice stadium in Bruck was closed in the fall, and the ice rink in Frohnleiten made way for a ball sports hall. The ice skating rink will also stop operating in Mödling. These developments are not an isolated case, but part of a nationwide trend: more and more locations can no longer afford energy-intensive operations.

The Austrian Ice Hockey Association (ÖEHV) is alarmed. Managing director Alexander Helwig warns the “Kronen Zeitung” of a gradual erosion of the infrastructure. It is not only the declining number of available ice surfaces that is problematic, but also the shortened operating times of many systems. This would limit training opportunities, thin out game plans and jeopardize youth programs.

Smaller clubs in particular are under pressure: if training and game operations can no longer be maintained, in extreme cases there is a risk of dissolution.

It’s about more than just sporting success. The association emphasizes the social importance of exercise and club life. Sport not only promotes physical fitness, but also team spirit, discipline and mental health. Investments in sports infrastructure should therefore also be seen as a preventive measure in the health sector.

The ÖEHV therefore calls for a clear political commitment to Austria as a sports location. In addition to short-term support measures, long-term strategies are needed to promote energy-efficient modernization of ice rinks and keep operations affordable.
