USC Velden faces an uncertain future. The financial situation of the Division I club is critical because the operation of the ice rink causes high losses. In the draft budget for 2024, a loss of around 188,000 euros is expected – a value that has recently triggered increasing speculation about a possible closure of the facility.
“I need clarity by the end of January at the latest. After all, we have to plan with our players and sponsors,” explains chairwoman Gabi Pschernig to the “Kronen Zeitung”. For them it is clear: “Without ice in Velden the club has no future.”
While Elias Ladinig’s team welcomes Huben on Saturday, those responsible are primarily looking behind the scenes – and there is at least a small silver lining on the horizon. A potential investor has expressed interest in taking over the hall. According to Mayor Ferdinand Vouk, the talks are already in an advanced phase: “We are currently working on a declaration of intent. A decision should be made by the end of December.”
However, one thing is already clear: additional investments await the new operator. Due to an EU requirement, the coolant used must be replaced by 2028. The necessary conversions are estimated at around 100,000 euros.
