A petition to preserve the ice skating rink was started in Mödling. The background is the city’s decision not to continue operating the facility for cost reasons. As an ORF report reported yesterday, a closure would deprive more than 100 children of the opportunity to regularly pursue their sport. Ice hockey, ice skating and ice dancing courses as well as school sports would be particularly affected.
The main reasons for the planned closure are financial burdens on the city of Mödling and the outdated technical equipment of the facility. According to the operator, the ice rink causes high running costs while the city is faced with high levels of debt. Without additional support from surrounding communities, sponsors or the state of Lower Austria, the community currently sees no possibility of continuing operations in the long term.
