Surprising cancellation: Canada is missing from the well-known tournament!

Team Canada will not compete in the traditional Spengler Cup 2026. The Canadian Ice Hockey Association unexpectedly announced this, causing a stir in the sports world.

The background to the decision is the expiry of the long-term agreement between Hockey Canada and the tournament’s organizing committee after the 2025 event. Despite negotiations, no new agreement could be reached in time that would have secured the Canadian national team’s participation in 2026.

The Spengler Cup, which takes place annually in Davos, is considered one of the most prestigious invitational tournaments in ice hockey. For decades, Team Canada was an integral part of the competition and shaped the tournament with numerous successes and high-class performances.

In a statement, Hockey Canada emphasized the importance of the tournament: They were grateful for the long-standing partnership and the support from fans and organizers in Davos. At the same time, it was made clear that discussions about a possible return would continue in the future.
