Daily Dose of the Dub: Raiders acquire Watts, CHL unveils team of the week, Weekly Report notes

Raiders acquire Watts from Giants

The Prince Albert Raiders have acquired forward Brayden Watts from the Vancouver Giants in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2021 WHL Bantam Draft. In 57 games last season, Watts recorded 12 goals and 26 assists en route to a WHL Championship Final appearance where his Giants lost to the Raiders team he is now joining.

With the move, the Raiders have Watts, Jeremy Masella and Max Martin on their active roster as overage players. They could see Zack Hayes return to the club at some point, however, he has yet to be cut from the Anaheim Ducks training camp that he is attending on a try-out when most players are already on their way to AHL camps, so it doesn’t look like Raiders fans should expect Hayes back in the lineup this season.

For the Giants, the move leaves them one above the overage limit with Owen Hardy, Dylan Plouffe, Milos Roman, and David Tendeck listed on the active roster.

Raiders sign Fouquette

The Raiders also announced the signing of 2019 fourth-round draft pick Tre Fouquette to his WHL Education Contract. Fouquette will spend the 2019-20 season with the SMHL’s Prince Albert Mintos where he’s already played two regular-season games

CHL unveils “Team of the Week”

The CHL is trying something new this year, with a “Team of the Week” which they’ll announce every Tuesday going forward. On the first edition of the team are Everett Silvertips forward Bryce Kindopp, Vancouver Giants defenseman Seth Bafaro, and Seattle Thunderbirds goalie Roddy Ross.

Hrabik off to Barracuda camp

1999-born forward Krystof Hrabik is headed to training camp with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda. The forward is eligible to return to the Tri-City Americans as an overage import but it remains to be seen whether he will return to the club. He joins Kyle Olson as an overage player the Americans are waiting on to return from an AHL camp. If neither returns to the club, the Americans will have Dom Schmiemann and Beck Warm as their overagers, leaving them with an open spot to acquire another 20-year-old.

Wheat Kings release Unger from active roster

Connor Unger is headed to the Okotoks Oilers of the AJHL after being released from the active roster of the Brandon Wheat Kings. The 17-year-old did not suit up for any regular-season games for the Wheat Kings but did suit up for two preseason games posting a 4.00 GAA and 0.886 save percentage.

Hurricanes acquire Edmundson from Blues

The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired defenseman Joel Edmundson (190 GP, 15 G, 53 A with the Moose Jaw Warriors and Kamloops Blazers) along with forward Dominik Bokk and a seventh-round pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft from the St. Louis Blues for defenseman Justin Faulk and a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. Edmundson had played his entire NHL career with the Blues to this point notching 13 goals and 39 assists in 269 games, winning a Stanley Cup with the Blues this past year.

Gabrielle released by Slovakian team

Jesse Gabrielle (277 GP, 123 G, 105 A with the Brandon Wheat Kings, Regina Pats and Prince George Cougars) has requested and received his release from Nitra in the Slovakian Extraliga. Gabrielle had suited up for four games this season and had a goal and an assist.

Balej released in Germany

Jozef Balej (176 GP, 105 G, 85 A with the Portland Winterhawks) has been released by Freiburg in the German second league. In four games this he tallied two goals.
