Three games postponed, schedule adjustment upcoming

A trio of DUB games were postponed in what the league said was “due to a series of forthcoming WHL scheduling adjustments.”

The following games were postponed to a later date:

Tuesday, February 15: Red Deer at Edmonton and Regina at Winnipeg
Thursday, February 17: Moose Jaw at Lethbridge

Chiefs relieve Maglio of head coaching duties, Smith named interim coach

The press release from the Chiefs said:

The Spokane Chiefs announced on Thursday that Head Coach Adam Maglio has been relieved of his duties, effective immediately.

Associate Coach Ryan Smith will take over as Interim Head Coach for the remainder of the 2021-22 season. Assistant Coach Dustin Donaghy will move into a full-time role.

“We feel like a change is needed for our group,” Chiefs President Mark Miles said. “The season hasn’t progressed like we hoped it would. We still have a lot of games remaining and we want to put our team in a position to develop both as a unit and individually. We look forward to Ryan and Dustin leading that charge.

“We appreciate the time and effort Adam put into the organization.”

Maglio was hired as an associate coach on July 19, 2019, to work with then head coach Manny Viveiros. On September 1, 2020, he was named head coach to replace Viveiros who was named to the Henderson Silver Knights coaching staff.

DUB Recap

Playing in their first game since a 5-4 SO loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors on January 28, the Winnipeg ICE downed the visiting Brandon Wheat Kings 6-2. The ICE were playing their first home game since December 18th. A capped attendance of 1,000 watched on as their hometown club scored three first-period goals before adding a fourth before the Wheat Kings got on the board to make it 4-1 after forty minutes. The Ice then outscored the Wheat Kings 2-1 in the third in their 6-2 win.

Connor McClennon (29th, 30th, 31st) led the way with a hat-trick for the ICE. Zachary Benson (13th), Jakin Smallwood (18th), and Matthew Savoie (20th) rounded out the scoring for the ICE. Chad Nychuk (11th) and Nolan Ritchie (18th) replied for the Wheat Kings.

Daniel Hauser made 18 stops in the win for the ICE as he moved to 14-1-1-0 on the season (21-1-2-0 in his career). Ethan Kruger went the distance for Brandon stopping 24 of 30 shots in the loss. The boxscore.

Miner recalled to Eagles

Trent Miner (Vancouver 2017-21) was again recalled by the Colorado Eagles from the Utah Grizzlies. With the Eagles, he has appeared in three games going 1-2-0 with a 3.09 goals against average and a .864 save percentage. With the Grizzlies, he has an 11-5-0 record with a 2.41 GAA and a .919 SV% with 4 shutouts.

In his four-year WHL career, the 20-year-old netminder went 48-28-5 with a 2.49 GAA and .910 SV% with the Giants.

Dowling waived by Canucks

Justin Dowling (Swift Current 2006-11) was placed on waivers by the Vancouver Canucks. In his first season with the Canucks, the Cochrane, AB product has four points (2G-2A) in 22 games.

The forward from Cochrane, AB played his entire 280 game DUB career with the Broncos where he picked up 242 points (81G-161A).

Lewington recalled by Boston

Tyler Lewington (Medicine Hat 2011-15), who had made his Boston Bruins debut earlier this season was again recalled by Boston from Providence. He has spent the majority of the 2021-22 season with the AHL’s Bruins where he has played 26 games collecting four points (1G-3A). In two games with the big club, he has no points and seven penalty minutes.

The 27-year-old Edmonton product played his entire DUBcareer with the Tigers where the defenseman was the captain in his final season. He had 122 points (18 goals, 94 assists) in 250 games.

Leason recalled by Capitals

Brett Leason (Tri-City, Prince Albert 2015-19) was recalled by the Washington Capitals from their AHL affiliate Hershey Bears just a couple of days after being assigned there. In 34 games with the Caps, he has six points (3G-3A) and in six games with the Bears, he has a goal.

The Calgary-born forward played for the Americans and Raiders where he came into his own late in his career. In 190 DUB games, he had 140 points (60G-80A).

Cholowksi reassigned to Checkers

A day after he was claimed by the Seattle Kraken, Dennis Cholowski (Portland, Prince George 2017-18) was reassigned to the Charlotte Checkers.

The defenseman played just one season in the DUB that he split between the Winterhawks and Cougars. In 69 games he averaged almost a point-per-game with 66 points (14G-52A).

Pickard extends with Grizzlys

Chet Pickard (Tri-City 2005-09) signed a contract extension with Grizzlys Wolfsburg is good until 2023. The first-round NHL pick (18th overall in 2008 by Nashville) in his third season with the Grizzlys and seventh in the German DEL. This year he is 6-5-0 with a 2.92 GAA and .899 SV% in 11 games.

In his four-year DUB career all with the Americans he went 107-43-9 with a 2.48 GAA and .914 SV%.

Chyzowski reassigned to Growlers

Ryan Chyzowski (Medicine Hat 2015-21) was reassigned by the Toronto Marlies to the ECHL’s Newfoundland Growlers. In 17 games with the Marlies, the 21-year-old forward had five points, all goals. In 14 games with the Growlers, he has 14 points (6G-8A).

The Kamloops, BC product played his entire DUB career with the Tigers where he played 280 games collecting 217 points (98G-119A), and was team captain for his last season in the Hat.

Thomas signs with Växjö

Ben Thomas (Calgary, Vancouver 2012-16) signed with the Växjö Lakers HC of Sweden’s SHL for the remainder of the season. The 25-year-old had started the season with Leksands IF (also of the SHL) where he played 23 games collecting three points (2G-1A).

Thomas (a defenseman) started his career with his hometown Hitmen before playing his final 60 games with the Giants. In 206 DUB games, he collected 90 points (22G-68A).

Nikolishin signs with Ilves Tampere

Ivan Nikolishin (Everett, Red Deer 2013-16) has signed with Ilves Tampere (Liiga in Finland) after a mutual release form the KHL’s Amur Khabarovsk. The 25-year-old forward had 19 points (8G-11A) in 39 games with the KHL club. He also suited up for nine games with Neftyanik Almetievsk (VHL) where he had 10 points (1G-9A).

Nikolishin played three seasons in the DUB where he played the first two with the Silvertips before ending his career with the 2016 Memorial Cup host team Rebels. in 216 games he scored 65 goals and added 138 assists for 203 points.
