Americans end Blazers winning streak with 4-3 win

The Tri-City Americans started off their Canadian road trip on the right foot with a 4-3 win over the Kamloops Blazers at the Sandman Centre. The Americans ended their six-game losing streak and put a halt to the Blazers’ nine-game winning streak.

Fraser Minten (13th) opened the scoring for the Blazers in th first period before Petr Moravec (10th) tied the contest before the end of the first session. Neither team added to the score in the second period and headed to the third tied at 1-1. Reese Belton (ninth) gave the Blazers the lead just under five minutes into the final period. Moravec (11th) scored his second of the game less than seven minutes later to tie the contest up at 2-2. Connor Bouchard gave the Americans a 3-2 lead just over a minute later with his seventh of the season. Bouchard (eights) then added his second of the night with an empty netter and eventual game-winner with 1:06 left to give the Ams a 4-2 lead. Daylan Kuefler scored with one second left to make the final 4-3. Tri-City was 2-for-7 on the powerplay while Kamloops went 1-for-4.

Tomas Suchanek was strong for the road team stopping 37 shots for his seventh win of the season. Dylan Garand stopped 23 shots in the loss. The boxscore.

Winterhawks stay on fire in 9-0 win over Chiefs

The Portland Winterhawks won their 10th-straight contest in convincing fashion with a 9-0 win over the hometown Spokane Chiefs. Eight different players scored for the Winterhawks as they moved to 16-0-0-1 in their last 17 games.

James Stefan (24th) opened the scoring just 2:55 into the game and the Winterhawks never looked back. Marcus Nguyen (11th), Josh Mori (first career), Clay Hanus (11th), and Jaydon Dureau (12th) made it 5-0 before the first intermission. Luke Schelter (seventh), Tyson Kozak (22nd, 23rd) with a pair and Kyle Chyzowski (eighth) scored in the second to give the Winterhawks a 9-0 lead after forty minutes. Neither team scored in the third.

The Winterhawks outshot the Chiefs 56-19 and went 2-for-9 on the powerplay in the win. The Chiefs had four opportunities.

Taylor Gauthier stopped all 19 shots he faced to pick up his third consecutive shutout. He broke the Winterhawks club-record shutout streak of 174:57 that was held by Brendan Burke (2013-14). Since his acquisition from the Cougars, he is 9-0-0-0 with a 1.33 goals against average and .954 save percentage. Manny Panghli got the start for the Chiefs and was pulled midway through the second but returned for the third period and stopped 42 of 49 shots he faced in 50:32. 16-year-old Cooper Michaluk made his DUB debut stopping five of seven shots he faced in 9:28 of action. Hurricanes stop Warriors win streak with 2-1 win

The Lethbridge Hurricanes traveled to Moose Jaw and skated to a 2-1 win over the Warriors. 2,208 fans watched as their hometown Warriors scored first before the Hurricanes replied with a pair of goals in the second period that went unanswered.

Daemon Hunt (12th) opened the scoring for the Warriors late in the first period to give the Warriors that all-important lead heading into the first intermission. The Hurricanes’ powerplay went on display early in the second when Yegor Klavdiev (10th) and Ty Nash (13th) scored on the man advantage just over three minutes apart to give the Hurricaned the lead. Neither team scored in the late stages of the second. Eric Alarie was stopped by Bryan Thomson on a penalty shot at 16:49 of the middle stanza. Despite Moose Jaw outshooting Lethbridge 21-5 in the third period, they were not able to get one by Thomson in the Hurricane net.

Playing in his first game since January 16th, Thomson finished with 34 stops on the night as he picked up his 11th win of the season for the Hurricanes. Carl Tetachuk stopped 21 shots in the loss. The boxscore.

Blades come from behind to beat the Hitmen 4-2

The Saskatoon Blades three times in the third period as they came back to beat the Calgary Hitmen 4-2 before 2,130 at the SaskTel Centre. Kyle Crnkovic (27th, 28th, 29th) scored a hat-trick to lead the way for the Blades and moved into first place in the DUB scoring race with 66 points.

Zac Funk (15th) opened the scoring for the Hitmen before Crnkovic replied before the end of the first period. Cael Zimmerman (10th) was the lone player to dent the twine in the second period to give the Hitmen a 2-1 lead. Rhett Rhinehart (sixth) tied up the contest for the Blades just over thirteen minutes into the third. Crnkovic notched his second of the game at 17:11 which was the game-winner before he completed the hat-trick with 59 seconds left into an empty net.

2001-born Nolan Maier stopped 30 of 32 shots to pick up his 20th win of the season. Ethan Buenaventura made 29 saves in the loss. The boxscore.

DUB Firsts

Mori scores first for Winterhawks

17-year-old defenseman Josh Mori scored his first career DUB goal in a 9-0 win over the Spokane Chiefs. The Richmond, BC product has played 18 games his year and now had five points (1G-4A)

Michaluk makes first appearance for Chiefs

2005-born Cooper Michaluk made his DUB debut for Spokane in a 9-0 loss at the hands of the Winterhawks. The Sherwood Park, AB netminder played the final 9:28 of the second period where he allowed a pair of goals on seven shots.

He has played 14 games for the OHA Edmonton U18 Prep team where he is 4-5-4 with a 3.57 GAA and .895 SV%

Cholowski claimed by the Kraken

A day after Dennis Cholowski (Portland/Prince George 2017-18) was waived by the Washington Capitals, he was claimed by the Seattle Kraken. In seven games with the Caps, he has one assist. The Langley, BC product was an original selection by the Kraken in their Expansion Draft before being claimed by the Capitals earlier this season.

The defenseman played just one season in the DUB that he split between the Winterhawks and Cougars. In 69 games he averaged almost a point-per-game with 66 points (14G-52A).

MacKenzie signs extension with Slovan Bratislava

Matt MacKenzie (Calgary, Tri-City 2007-11) has signed a one-year contract extension with the HC Slovan Bratislava (Slovakia). The 30-year-old defender was a one-time third-round selection by the Buffalo Sabres (83rd overall in 2010). Thus far in 2021-22 with the Sky Blues (or Eagles depending where you look), MacKenzie has 34 points (4G-30A) in 38 games which puts him fifth on the team in scoring.

In his four-year DUB career, the New Westminster, BC product player all but 33 of his 225 games with the Hitmen collecting 97 points (18G-79A) along the way.
