More games postponed

The weekend home-and-home series between the Prince Albert Raiders and the Swift Current Broncos on January 7 and 8 has been postponed.

The release stated that the games were postponed “due to multiple players and staff being added to the WHL COVID-19 Protocol List due to exhibiting symptoms or having tested positive for COVID-19.”

Later in the afternoon, the WHL announced seven other games were postponed. Two games were postponed due to travel delays due to weather and “multiple players and staff being added to the WHL COVID-19 Protocol List due to exhibiting symptoms or having tested positive for COVID-19.”

Games affected due to weather: Everett at Spokane and Seattle at Tri-City (both January 7).

Games affected due to COVID-19 Protocol: Portland at Kamloops and Vancouver at Kelowna (January 7). Vancouver at Kamloops and Everett at Tri-City (January 8). Tri-City at Everett (January 9).

Christiansen recalled from Jackets taxi squad, makes NHL debut

Just one day after being recalled to the Blue Jackets taxi squad, Jake Christiansen (Everett, 2015-20) was recalled to Columbus’ main roster and made his NHL debut for the club.

Wearing #32, Christiansen played 12:46 in his debut, he had one shot on goal and a pair of blocks in a 3-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils.

In his five-year WHL career, all spent with the Silvertips, Christiansen played in 297 games, He averaged just over 1/2 point per game managing 152 points (50 goals, 102 assists).

Zamula recalled to Flyers taxi squad

Egor Zamula (Regina, Calgary 2017-20) was recalled to the Philadelphia Flyers from their AHL affiliate the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Zamula made his first NHL appearance the same night against the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 6-2 loss. He played 19:46 and had three blocked shots.

So far this season with the Phantoms he had played in 25 games collecting 14 points on three goals and 11 assists.

During his WHL career, Zamula played in 158 games (38 with Regina) over three seasons where he scored 19 goals and added 83 assists for 102 points.

Thomson reassigned to Belleville

Lassi Thomson (Kelowna, 2018-19) was reassigned to the AHL’s Belleville Senators from the parent Ottawa Senators. Thomson has split time between the big club and the baby Senators. With Ottawa, Thomson has three assists in 12 games while with the AHL’s Senators he has five points (two goals, three assists) in nine games.

Thomson’s WHL career lasted one season with the Rockets where the defender from Tampere, Finland scored 17 goals in 63 games while adding 24 assists for 41 points.

Kindopp returned to the Gulls

After making his NHL debut for the Anaheim Ducks, Bryce Kindopp (Everett) was returned to the San Diego Gulls of the AHL.

Kindopp made his debut January, 4 and played 6:06, recording a pair of shots for the Ducks in a 4-1 win over the Flyers.

Breitkreuz joins Lowen Frankfurt

After a couple of seasons away, Brett Breitkreuz (Kelowna, Edmonton, and Vancouver 2006-10) rejoined Lowen Frankfurt of the DEL2 where he helped the team win a championship in 2016-17.

Breitkreuz had been playing senior hockey for the Foam Lake Flyers in the LLHL where he had 15 points in nine games (seven goals, eight assists).

“I’m very happy to be back in Frankfurt,” Breitkreuz said in a press release for the club. “When the opportunity presented itself to rejoin the Lions, it was an easy decision for me! The team has had a successful first half of the season so far, so I’m eagerly awaiting to meet all of my teammates and do my part to ensure that the team and the organization achieve their big goal.

And to the best fans of German ice hockey … I hope that the ice rink will be full again in the next few weeks. I can’t wait to hear you guys. It feels like I’m coming home after a long vacation!”

In 266 games in the WHL (mostly with Edmonton), Breitkreuz skated in 266 games collecting 59 goals and 79 assists for 138 points.

Brkin released, Hughes joins the Komets

Liam Hughes (Edmonton, Seattle, Lethbridge, and Winnipeg 2016-20) has signed on to join the Fort Wayne Komets of the ECHL. The Kelowna, BC product had been with the University of Manitoba of the Canadian USports. Through eight games with the Bisons, he had a 3-4-0 record with a 3.73 goals against average and .891 save percentage.

Through parts of four seasons in the WHL, Hughes played 102 games. He held a 50-46-12 record with a 3.13 GAA and .906 SV%.

In a corresponding move, Bailey Brkin (Swift Current, Kootenay, Spokane, and Moose Jaw 2016-20) was released from the Komets roster. Brkin was 2-2-0 in four appearances with Fort Wayne he had a 3.06 GAA and .869 SV%. He has also played for the SPHL’s Quad City Storm where he holds an 8-1-1 record with a 1.79 GAA and .937 SV%.

Brkin played in parts of four seasons in the WHL where he played 89 games with a 44-32-6 record. He had a 3.40 GAA and .898 SV% in his WHL career.
