DUB’s Daily Dose: Another DUB postponement, Five DUB teams in CHL Top-10, Wednesday DUB Recap, and more!

 

DUB Update

The Friday, January 28, game between the Brandon Wheat Kings and Saskatoon Blades has been postponed due to the Blades being unable to field a complete team as nine players are currently on the COVID-19 List.

CHL Top-10

The CHL’s Top-10 rankings are out and five (5) DUB teams are in the rankings… The Winnipeg ICE (first), Edmonton Oil Kings (second), Everett Silvertips (third), Portland Winterhawks (seventh), and Kamloops Blazers (10th) have made their presence known this season throughout the CHL.

Blazers top Giants 2-1

The Kamloops Blazers scored once in the first period and once in the second period as they held on to a 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Giants before 2,957 at the Sandman Centre. It was the Blazers’ third-straight victory and are the fifth team to 25 wins on the season.

Luke Toporowski (19th) scored his fourth goal in three games since his acquisition from the Spokane Chiefs while on the powerplay and defenseman Mats Lindgren (third) scored while shorthanded to give the Blazers a 2-0 lead heading into the third. Fabian Lysell (13th) replied for the Giants with a powerplay goal in the third. Both teams went 1-for-6 on the powerplay.

Dylan Garand stopped 27 of 28 shots in picking up his 20th victory for the Blazers who now have 25 wins and a seven-point lead on Kelowna. Jesper Vikman also made 27 saves for the Giants in the loss.

Rockets hang on to beat Royals 4-3

Four different players scored for the Kelowna Rockets in a 4-3 victory over the Victoria Royals before 1,820 at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena in Victoria.

Jake Lee (ninth) scored with 1:54 left in the game to end the Royals comeback and to give the Rockets a 4-3 win. Andrew Cristall (11th), Mark Liwiski (10th), and John Babcock (first career goal) also scored for the Rockets who had a 3-1 lead heading into the third period. The win is the Rockets’ fourth straight. Anthony Wilson (fourth), Bailey Peach (24th), and Matthew Hodson (second) replied for the Royals who have lost nine-straight contests (0-8-0-1).

Jari Kykkanen made his first appearance for the Rockets. The Lloydminster, AB product stopped 21 of 24 Royals shots in collecting his first career WHL win in his WHL debut. Tyler Palmer was strong in goal for the Royals making 45 saves on 49 Rockets shots.

DUB Firsts

Seventeen-year-old Jari Kykkanen made his WHL debut in a 4-3 win over the Victoria Royals on Wednesday night. The Rockets sixth-round pick (115th overall) in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft signed with the club in late December.

Seventeen-year-old defenseman John Babcock scored his first career WHL goal in a 4-3 win over the Victoria Royals on Wednesday night. A Rockets fifth-round pick (110th overall) in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft was playing in his 35th WHL game for the Rockets. It was a very strange goal, watching a replay of it would be the best way to describe it.

DUB Alumni

Addison sent to baby Wild

Calen Addison (Lethbridge 2015-2020) was sent to the Iowa Wild by the NHL’s Minnesota Wild. Addison has spent time with both clubs this year. In 17 games in Iowa, the Brandon, MB product has nine points (2G-7A) and with Minnesota, he has played nine games collecting three points (2G-1A).

The defenseman played his entire DUB career with the Hurricanes where he skated in 252 games where he averaged 0.85 points per game with 215 points (41G-174A).

Henry, Miner recalled to the Eagles

Nick HenryΒ (Regina, Lethbridge 2016-19) and Trent Miner (Vancouver 2017-2021) were returned to the Utah Grizzlies by the AHL’s Colorado Eagles.

Henry has been up and down between Colorado and Utah this season multiple times this season. With the AHL’s Eagles, he has played 20 games collecting one assist. in four games with the Grizzlies he has suited up in four games where he has a pair of points (1G-1A).

Over his three-year WHL stint, the right-winger played 194 games where he scored 78 times and added 126 assists for 204 points.

Miner has also been up and down between the Colorado Avalanche taxi squad, Eagles and Grizzlies. With the Eagles, he has appeared in three games going 1-2-0 with a 3.09 goals against average and a .864 save percentage. With the Grizzlies, he has a 10-4-0 record with a 2.25 GAA and a .923 SV% with 4 shutouts.

In his four-year WHL career, the 20-year-old netminder went 48-28-5 with a 2.49 GAA and .910 SV% with the Giants.

Sautner recalled to the Canucks from the taxi squad

Ashton Sautner (Edmonton 2011-15) was recalled to the Vancouver Canucks taxi squad from their farm club in Abbotsford. The 27-year-old defenseman has six points (1G-5A) in 23 games.

The Flin Flon, MB product played his entire four-year DUB career with the Oil Kings where he played 265 games picking up 117 points (24G-93A).

Thomson recalled from the Baby Sens

Lassi Thomson (Kelowna 2018-19) was recalled from the Belleville Senators by the NHL club in Ottawa. The right-handed defenseman has been shuttled between the NHL and AHL Senators multiple times this season. In 13 games with the big club, Thomson has four points (4A). With the AHL Sens, he has skated in 15 games where he has eight points (5G-3A).

In his single season with the Rockets, Thomson had 41 points in just 63 games, 17 of the points were goals.

Lotz released by the Admirals

Austin Lotz (Everett, Medicine Hat 2011-16) was released from the ECHL’s Norfolk Admirals and is back with the Birmingham Bulls of the SPHL. In three games with the Admirals, he had a 5.48 GAA and .863 SV% while going 0-2-1. With the Bulls, Lotz has played in 12 games going 1-9-2 with a 3.52 GAA and a .897 SV%.

The Winnipeg, MB product played the majority of his 170 games with the Silvertips before ending his career with the Tigers (six games). He accumulated a 75-63-17 record with a 2.96 GAA and .902 SV% and 11 SO.

Irving loaned to Ticino

Leland Irving (Everett 2003-08) was loaned to the HCB Ticino Rockets (Swiss League) by HC Lugano (NL, Swiss top league). In six games with Lugano, Irving went 1-5-0 with a 3.18 GAA and a .886 SV%.

The Barrhead, AB product played his entire 195 DUB games with the Silvertips where he went 107-63-11 with an astounding 2.05 GAA and .925 SV% and a whopping 21 shutouts.
