Daily Dose of the Dub: Peckford leaves Warrriors; Jevne lights up Rebels

Peckford steps away from the WHL

In some of the most surprising WHL news in some time, shortly before game time, the Moose Jaw Warriors announced that Ryan Peckford was stepping away from the team.

The 1999-born Peckford, who has eight goals and eight assists for 16 points this season, is fifth on the team in scoring.

Since the team included that he has not asked for a trade, it appears this is more about a desire to play hockey than wanting out of Moose Jaw.

Peckford was acquired from the Victoria Royals last December along with a fourth-round pick in 2018 for Noah Gregor and an eighth-round selection in 2018.

Three stars of the night:

  1. Ryan Jevne (Medicine Hat) – Four point night for the Tigers forward. This was the first hat-trick of his long WHL career. His four points led Medicine Hat to a 6-2 win over the Red Deer Rebels.
  2. Trey Fix-Wolansky (Edmonton) – A hat-trick for the Oil Kings sniper, though it was in a losing cause. He scored all three goals, but Edmonton fell 6-3 to the Prince Albert Raiders.
  3. Bailey Brkin (Spokane) – He stopped all 27 Prince George Cougars shots in the Chiefs 4-0 win.

Honorable mentions:

Josh Brook had a goal and an assist in Moose Jaw’s 3-1 victory over the Kootenay ICE… Brett Leason had three assists in the Raiders 6-3 win over Edmonton. He now has points in all 26 games P.A. has played this season and a WHL-leading 59 overall. The Raiders are 25-1… Luka Burzan had two goals and an assist and the Brandon Wheat Kings ousted the Swift Current Broncos 5-1… Dorrin Luding turned aside 30-of-31 shots for the Saskatoon Blades in their 2-1 road win over the Victoria Royals… Trent Miner stopped 20-of-21 shots by the Kelowna Rockets, leading his Vancouver Giants to a 2-1 victory… Dustin Wolf stopped 34-of-35 for the Everett Silvertips and they held off the Cody Glass-less Portland Winterhawks 4-1.

Troubling moments:

-Prior to the game between Everett and Portland, the WHL announced Gianni Fairbrother had been given a two-game suspension for his hit against Kelowna on Saturday. Since he missed Everett’s game in Portland on Sunday and this game tonight, he has served the suspension.

Kaid Oliver of Victoria was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for a check to the head of Dawson Davidson of Saskatoon.
