DUB’s Daily Dose: Edmonton reigns as Kings of the CHL Top-10, Mannix and Shcherbyna debut, DUB alumni dominate Canada West All-Star Teams, and more!

 

Oil Kings remain in top spot in the CHL Top-10

For the second week in a row, the Edmonton Oil Kings reign supreme in the CHL’s Top-10 rankings with eight straight wins and a 38-11-2-1 record including an incredible 25-2-0-0 record on home ice.

The Everett Silvertips and Winnipeg ICE hold steady in the number two and three spots. Both teams have been putting up decent numbers of late with the Silvertips picking up points in their last 14 games (11-0-1-3) and the ICE picking up 6-of-8 points during the week.

The Portland Winterhawks moved up to number six and clinched a playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Kamloops Blazers remained firm at eighth place and is the first B.C. Division team to clinch a playoff spot.

Mannix debuts for Wheat Kings

2005-born defenseman Eastyn Mannix made his debut Wednesday for the Brandon Wheat Kings in a 7-6 loss to the visiting Regina Pats. The Wainright, AB product is playing for the Northern Alberta Xtreme U18 Prep team in the CSSHL U18 where he has 20 points (5G-15A) in 31 games. He was the Wheat Kings’ fourth-round pick in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft and signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement with the Manitoba franchise on September 14, 2021.

Shcherbyna debuts with Chiefs

Luka Shcherbyna was recalled by the Spokane Chiefs as an affiliated player ahead of their Wednesday matchup at Kamloops and he made his debut in a 7-2 loss to the Blazers. The Chiefs’ second-round pick (41st) overall in the 2021 WHL Prospects draft leads St. George’s School U17 Prep team (CSSHL) with 54 points (27G-18A) in 30 games this season. The Vancouver product signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement with the Chiefs on December 15, 2021.

DUB players sweep Canada West (USports) First All-Star Team

In goal: Rylan Toth (Red Deer, Seattle 2014-17) went 11-5-1 with the University of British Columbia with a 2.34 goals-against average, .920 save percentage, and 4 shutouts.

On defense: Clayton Kirichenko (Saskatoon, Vancouver, Medicine Hat 2013-17) played 20 games for the University of Alberta where he had 18 points (2G-18A). Ryan Gagnon (Victoria 2012-17) had 15 points (2G-13A) in 18 games patrolling the blueline for the University of Calgary.

The forwards: Nolan Yaremko (Tri-City 2014-19) almost averaged two points per game with 39 points (19G-20A) in just 20 games for Mount Royal University, leading USports Men’s hockey in scoring. His teammate Riley Sawchuk (Tri-City, Edmonton 2015-20) joins him on the first all-star team as he collected 38 points (15G-23A) in 20 games with the Cougars.Β Tyler Sandhu (Everett, Red Deer, Tri-City 2012-17) had 23 points (8G-15A) in 20 games joining his UBC teammate Toth on the first team.

Five DUB alumni on Canada West Second Team

In goal: the only non-DUB player in the 18 slots is University of Regina goaltender, Brandon Holtby toiled in the SJHL and MJHL in his junior days. he went 7-6-1 in 14 games with a 2.75 GAA, .913 SV%, and three shutouts.

The defense: Connor Hobbs (Medicine Hat, Regina 2013-17) had 22 points (4G-18A) in just 16 games for the University of Saskatchewan. Jonathan Smart (Kelowna, Regina, Kootenay 2015-19) picked up 23 points (5G-18 A) while playing for UBC.
Upfront: Grayson Pawlenchuk (Red Deer 2012-18) played 18 games for the UofA collecting 16 points (7G-9A) along the way. Conner Chaulk (Swift Current, Calgary 2015-18) averaged a point per game with the University of Regina collecting 17 points (9G-8A) in 17 games for the Cougars. Jared Dmytriw (Victoria, Red Deer, Vancouver 2014-19) Joined his teammate Hobbs on the Second All-Star team playing 20 games for the Huskies picking up 22 points (7G-15A).

DUB alumni sweep Canada West All-Rookie Team

The stopper: Carl Stankowski (Seattle, Calgary, Winnipeg 2016-21) went 4-3-0 in seven games for UofC where he had a 2.73 GAA and .888 SV%.
On patrol: Dylan Plouffe (Vancouver, Medicine Hat 2014-20) had 17 points (2G-15A) in 19 games for UofA. Noah King (Swift Current, Spokane 2016-20) played 20 games for UofC where he notched 10 points (3G-7A).

On the forecheck: Riley Sawchuk double-shifts. The USports leading scorer, and First Team All-Star, also made the cut for the All-Rookie Team. Zane Franklin (Lethbridge, Kamloops 2014-20) made a name for himself in USports as he led the UofS with 26 points (6G-20A) in 20 games, finishing seventh in USports scoring. Gary Haden (Medicine Hat, Saskatoon, Victoria 2015-20), another UofA Golden Bear had 21 points (10G-11A) in 20 games.

Waltz joins the Clan

After receiving his release from the Fife Flyers, Colton Waltz (Brandon, Saskatoon 2010-16) signed with the Glasgow Clan both of England’s Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL). The 27-year-old defenseman started the season with the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL where he played eight games and was held off the scoresheet. He joined the Fife on November 24, 2021. In 15 games with the Fife Flyers, he had three points (1G-2A). He will wear #74 with the Clan.

The Vermillion, AB product played 272 DUB games, the majority with the Wheat Kings before winding up his career with the Blades. He scored 15 times and assisted on 74 others for a total of 89 points.

Hamblin signs with Oilers

James Hamblin (Medicine Hat 2015-20) signed a two-year entry-level deal with the Edmonton Oilers. The 22-year-old forward had originally signed with the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors back in 2020 and turned it into an NHL deal. With the Condors this season he has 20 points (12G-8A).

In his five-year DUB career, the Edmonton product played 323 games all with the Tigers where he scored 115 goals and added 168 assists.
