Oil Kings & Royals strike a deal

The Edmonton Oil Kings acquired 20002-born defenseman Carson Golder (54GP, 0G, 2A) from the Victoria Royals in exchange for a 2022 ninth-round WHL Prospects Draft pick. The pick originally belonged to the Saskatoon Blades. Golder played 2020-21 with the BCHL’s Trail Smoke Eaters (15GP, 2G, 1A) and the VIJHL’s Campbell River Storm (2GP, 0G, 1A). Americans release trio of overage players

The Tri-City Americans announced on Wednesday that they have released 2001-born forwards Booker Daniel (69GP, 11G, 11A with Tri-City), Edge Lambert (79GP, 19G, 14A with Prince George and Tri-City), and 2001-born defenceman Bryan McAndrews (117GP, 2G, 4A with Tri-City). All three players have cleared WHL waivers.

Tri-City now has Samuel Huo, Sasha Mutala, Connor Bouchard, and Mitchell Brown remaining on its roster of overage players. Andrej Golian signed a professional contract in the Czech Republic. Huo is recovering from off-season surgery.

Pats sign Barnett

2019 ninth-round draft pick of the Regina Pats, Brayden Barnett, has signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement. Barnett, a native of Martensville, SK, played 2020-21 with the Regina Pat Canadians U18 AAA team. The 6-foot-3 forward registered one goal and two assists in seven games.

Clayton signs with Cleveland

21-year-old defenceman Cole Clayton (214GP, 17G, 71A with Medicine Hat) has signed a professional contract with the Cleveland Monsters of the AHL. The Monsters are the affiliate of the Columbus Blu Jacks. Clayton is coming off a 23 game season in which he scored nine goals and added 21 assists. Clayton won the DUBNetwork defenseman of the year award.

Persson retires

29-year-old forward John Persson (200GP, 63G, 67A with Red Deer ’09-’12) has been forced to retire due to a concussion received in November of 2020. Persson appeared in just 12 games for Byrnas IF of the SHL before the injury cut his season short. He had three goals and one assist. Persson was selected in the fifth round of the 2011 NHL Draft by the New York Islanders. He appeared in 10 NHL games, scoring once. Red Deer selected Persson 41st overall at the 2009 CHL Import Draft.

Helewka re-signs with Monsters

25-year-old forward Adam Helewka (244GP, 119G, 119A with Spokane and Red Deer ’12-’16) has signed for a second season with the Cleveland Monsters of the AHL. The Monsters are the AHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Helewka scored three goals and added nine assists through 25 games in 2020-21. The San Jose Sharks selected Helewka in the fourth round of the 2015 NHL Draft.

Marincin joins HC Ocelari Trinec

29-year-old defenceman Martin Marincin (125GP, 25G, 71A with Prince George and Regina ’10-’12) has signed on with HC Ocelari Trinec of Czech hockey. Marincin played the entire 2020-21 season with the Toronto Marlies, scoring one goal and adding four assists in 14 games. Marincin was selected in the second round of the 2010 NHL Draft by the Edmonton Oilers, he was also first overall at the 2010 CHL Import Draft by the Cougars.

Burns signs with IceFighters

30-year-old forward Michael Burns (250GP, 48G, 63A with Edmonton, Vancouver, and Saskatoon ’07-’12) has signed on with IceFighters Leipsig of Germany3. Burns spent the last two seasons playing for the Hannover Indians of the same league. Last season in 27 games, Burns scored five goals and added 10 assists. Burns was originally selected in the third round of the 2006 WHL Prospects Draft by the Moose Jaw Warriors.
