Silvertips collect 30th win with victory over Thunderbirds

Jacob Wright scored twice and assisted on the winner as the Everett Silvertips collected their 30th win of the season in a 4-2 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds on Sunday with 5,573 fans in attendance at Angel Of The Winds Arena.

Aidan Sutter (second) scored the winner just before the halfway point of the third period. Jackson Berezowski (29th) sealed it with an empty-net goal with seven seconds left. The win gave the Silvertips a five-game streak. Henrik Rybinski (14th) and Reid Schaefer (16th) replied for the T-Birds.

Braden Holt stopped 32 of 34 shots picking up his 18th win for the Silvertips. Thomas Milic stopped 33 shots in the loss. The boxscore.

Another DUB for the Winterhawks in 8-0 win over the Americans

The Portland Winterhawks beat the Tri-City Americans 8-0 to continue on their torrid pace in front of 2,458 fans at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland. In picking up their seventh win in a row, the Winterhawks have gone 13 straight games picking up a point (12-0-0-1). Portland had a 40-17 advantage on the shot clock when the final buzzer sounded.

13 Winterhawks skaters picked up at least a point. Marcus Nguyen (eighth, ninth), James Stefan (19th, 20th), Cross Hanas (14th), Kyle Chyzowski (fifth), Luke Schelter (sixth), and Aidan Litke (12th) scored for the Winterhawks. Hanas added three assists for a four-point outing.

Taylor Gauthier stayed undefeated with Portland picking up his seventh win in his seventh game while making 17 saves for his first shutout of the season. Nick Avakyan got the start and made 22 saves through two periods of action. Tomas Suchanek stopped 10 of 11 in his 20 minutes of relief duty.ย The boxscore.

Blazers win sixth straight in 5-2 win over Giants

Five different players scored as the Kamloops Blazers picked up their sixth straight victory as they beat the Vancouver Giants 5-2 before 2,163 fans in Langley.

Luke Toporowski (24th) scored in his sixth straight game with the Blazers after his acquisition from the Chiefs. Caedan Bankier (14th), Logan Stankoven (23rd), Mats Lindgren (fourth), and Daylan Kuefler (19th) rounded out the scoring for the Blazers. Tom Cadieux (second, first with the Giants) and Evan Toth (third) replied for Vancouver who were outshot 36-19 in the loss.

Dylan Garand made 17 saves to pick up his 22nd win in the Blazer victory. Jesper Vikman stopped 31 of 36 shots directed his way in the Vancouver goal.ย The boxscore.

Cossa picks up second shutout in a row as Oil Kings shutout Hurricanes

The Edmonton Oil Kings scored twice in each period as they shut out the Lethbridge Hurricanes 6-0 at Rogers Place before 4,061 fans.

Dylan Guenther scored a hat-trick and added an assist, and Sebastian Cossa made 24 saves to lead the Oil Kings to a victory. Jalen Luypen (16th), Shea Van Olm (fourth), and Carter Souch (13th) rounded out the scoring for the victors.

The shutout was Cossa’s fourth of the season and 12th of his career. Jared Picklyk stopped 20 of 26 shots in the loss.ย The boxscore.

Kruger, Wheat Kings shutout Blades

Ethan Kruger made 23 stops as the Brandon Wheat Kings beat the Saskatoon Blades 3-0 at the SaskTel Centre.

Brandon scored a goal in each frame with Rylen Roersma (12th) opening the scoring in the first period. Ridly Greig (19th) added an insurance marker in the middle stanza before Vincent Iorio (seventh) sealed the game with a shorthanded empty-net goal with 39 seconds left.

Nolan Maier also made 23 saves in the loss for the Blades which saw their winning streak end at four games. The boxscore.

Filmon leads Broncos past Hitmen

Seventeen-year-old Josh Filmon‘s three-point outing led the Swift Current Broncos to a 4-2 win over the hometown Calgary Hitmen before 3,556 at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Filmon scored his 17th and 18th of the season and then added an assist for Swift Current.

Owen Pickering (seventh) and Josh Davies (12th) rounded out the scoring for the Broncos. Maxim Muranov (fourth) and Zac Funk (14th) replied for the Hitmen who actually outshot the Broncos 37-22 on Sunday afternoon.

Isaac Poulter was strong in goal for the Broncos making 35 saves in picking up his 13th victory on the season. Brayden Peters made 18 stops for the Hitmen in the loss.ย The boxscore.

Tigers come back to upset Rebels 3-2

Overage forward Logan Barlage (11th, 12th) scored twice in the third period as the Medicine Hat Tigers upset the Red Deer Rebels 3-2 in front of 1,699 at Co-Op Place in Medicine Hat.

Noah Danielson (10th) opened up the scoring for the Tigers with the only goal in the first period. Arshdeep Bains (20th) and Liam Keeler (20th) scored in the second period to give the Rebels a 2-1 lead heading into the final 20 minutes. Barlage then scored a pair in the third to give the last-place Tigers a win.

Beckett Langkow stopped 33 shots for the Tigers in picking up his third win of the season. Connor Ungar stopped 25 for Red Deer in the loss.ย The boxscore.

McCagherty debuts with Broncos

Swift Current Broncos 2nd round pick in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft, Maddix McCagherty made his debut for the club on Saturday night in Edmonton. The fifteen-year-old forward plays for Rink Hockey Academy in Kelowna where he has 25 points (9G-16A) in 23 games.

McNabb and Thompson sign extensions with Vegas

Brayden McNabb (Kootenay 2006-11) and Logan Thompson (Brandon 2014-18) both signed three-year extensions with the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights.

McNabb is in his fifth season with the Golden Knights franchise. In 45 games this season he has nine points (2G-7A) and leads the NHL in blocked shots with 110. He has played in 10 NHL seasons where he has also played with the Sabres and Kings sitting up for 552 games.

The Saskatoon product played his DUB career with the Ice where he played 258 games over five seasons. McNabb, a defenseman had 176 points (50G-126A) in his career and was the Ice captain when they appeared in the 2011 Memorial Cup.

Thompson, a 24-year-old goalie from Calgary has played a majority of the 2021-22 season with the Golden Knights AHL affiliate in Henderson where he has played 21 games going 11-7-4 with a 2.62 goals against average and .928 save percentage with a pair of shutouts. In his lone appearance with Vegas, he is 0-1-0 with a 3.21 GAA and .855 SV%

He played his entire DUB career with the Wheat Kings going 63-41-10 in 122 games where he had a 3.26 GAA, .905 SV%, and 4 shutouts for the Manitoba club.

Ross released by Dornirner

 

Nick Ross (Regina, Kamloops, Vancouver 2004-09) was released by Dornbirner EC Bulldogs. In 39 games in 2021-22, he has 19 points (all assists). The former first-round draft pick of the Phoenix Coyotes (30th overall in 2007) has played the last 10 seasons in Europe.

The Lethbridge, AB product played 288 DUB games mostly with the Pats before being traded to the Blazers and ending his career with the Giants. The defenseman had 145 points (33G-112A) in his career.

Colliton named head coach of Canada’s Olympic Men’s team

Jeremy Colliton (Prince Albert 2001-05) was named the Canadian Men’s Olympic Team head coach as a replacement for Claude Julien who is unable to travel due to an injury. Colliton was named to Canada’s staff as an assistant to Julien on January 14th.

The Blackie, AB product played his four WHL seasons with the Raiders suiting up for 229 games where he scored 71 times and assisting on 105 others which is good for 176 points. He was drafted by the New York Islanders in 2003. Over parts of five seasons with the Islanders, he picked up six points (three goals, three assists) in 57 games.
