WHL reschedules a pair of Pats and Wheat Kings games

The WHL announced the rescheduling of a pair of Brandon Wheat Kings and Regina Pats games.

  • Friday, January 21 is now Brandon at Regina (originally was to be Regina at Brandon).
  • Wednesday, March 2 is now Regina at Brandon (originally was to be Brandon at Regina).

Canada’s Olympic team management and coaches named

Shane Doan (Kamloops 1992-95) was named general manager of Team Canada’s Men’s Olympic club as they head to Beijing in February.

Doan was a three-year WHLer, playing his entire career with the Blazers winning a pair of Memorial Cups. In 174 games with the Blazers, the big winger put up 161 points (68 goals, 93 assists). He went on to a lengthy career in the NHL with the Winnipeg Jets/Phoenix Coyotes/Arizona Coyotes franchise playing in an amazing 1540 games with the franchise collecting 972 points (402 goals, 570 assists) while being the team captain from 2003 until his retirement in 2017.

Two-time world junior gold medalist and two-time Memorial Cup winner Nolan Baumgartner (Kamloops 1992-96) was named an assistant coach of Team Canada. Until recently he had been an assistant coach with the Vancouver Canucks, a position he had held for five seasons.

In 202 games over four seasons with the Blazers, the Calgary-born defenseman had 132 points (34 goals, 98 assists). Although he did not see huge success in the NHL, Baumgartner played in parts of 10 seasons in the NHL. He played 142 games with the Washington Capitals, Chicago Blackhawks, Vancouver Canucks, Pittsburgh Penguins, Philadelphia Flyers, and Dallas Stars where he tallied 47 points (seven goals, 40 assists).

Jeremy Colliton (Prince Albert 2001-05) was also named as an assistant coach for Team Canada. Colliton was named Chicago Black Hawks head coach November 6, 2018, and was replaced as head coach November 6, 2021. Prior to that, he had been the head coach of the Black Hawks AHL affiliate Rockford Ice Hogs for two seasons.

The Blackie, AB product played his four WHL seasons with the Raiders suiting up for 229 games where he scored 71 times and assisting on 105 others which was good for 176 points. He was drafted by the New York Islanders in 2003. Over parts of five seasons with the Islanders, he picked up six points (three goals, three assists) in 57 games.

Another former WHLer, Tyler Dietrich (Moose Jaw, Medicine Hat, Everett 2000-05) was added to Team Canada as an assistant coach. The Vancouver, BC product has coached at various levels (mostly in Hungary) before joining the Hockey Canada program as a video coach at multiple levels in Canada.

Dietrich’s WHL career lasted over parts of five seasons where he skated with the Warriors, Tigers, and Silvertips. In 133 games over those five seasons, he tallied 31 goals and 47 assists.

Also making Team Canada’s staff was former Edmonton Oil Kings Athletic Therapist Brian Cheeseman.

Hurricanes announce additions to Wall of Honour

The Lethbridge Hurricanes added their eighth and ninth players to the team’s Wall of Honour. This year’s additions are Mark Greig (Calgary Wranglers/Lethbridge 1986-90) and Kevin St. Jacques (Spokane, Lethbridge 1987-92).

Greig played his entire career with the Hurricanes franchise. he played five games for the Wranglers before the franchise relocated to Lethbridge. In 206 games over four seasons with the club, the High River, AB product put up 270 points (100 goals, 170 assists). The Hartford Whalers first-round selection (15th overall in 1990) carved out a decent professional career that spanned the IHL, AHL, NHL, and the DEL in Germany. He has been scouting for the Philadelphia Flyers since the 2007-08 season.

St. Jacques started his WHL career with the Chiefs before moving over to the Hurricanes. His numbers took off with the Hurricanes where he scored 110 goals in his final two seasons. In 291 WHL games, he had 341 points (161 goals, 180 assists). After his WHL graduation, the Edmonton, AB product skated in various minor pro leagues in North America CHL, IHL, UHL (CoHL), WCHL, and ECHL.

Gardner added to Blades roster for the weekend

Fifteen-year-old goaltender Evan Gardner joined the Saskatoon Blades for the weekend. Gardner served as Nolan Maier’s backup in a 6-4 Blades win over the Swift Current Broncos.

Gardner is currently with Rink Hockey Academy Kelowna U18 and has played 10 games going 7-3-0 with a 3.28 goals against average and .913 save percentage.
