Thunderbirds dominate Chiefs in 8-2 win

Despite dressing 16 skaters, the Seattle Thunderbirds outshot the Spokane Chiefs 41-22 and outscored them 8-2 at the accesso ShoWare Center in Kent, WA.

Henrik Rybinski led the way for the Thunderbirds with a four-point outing (2G-2A, 10th and 11th). Conner Roulette (14th), Mekai Sanders (10th), Reid Schaefer (15th), Lucas Ciona (eighth), Jordan Gustafson (14th), and Jared Davidson (16th) rounded out the scoring for the T-Birds. 13 of 16 skaters dressed picked up at least one point. Chase Bertholet (13th) and Saige Weinstein (first career goal) replied for the Chiefs.

Thomas Milic stopped 20 of 22 shots he faced to pick up his 15th win for the Thunderbirds. Mason Beaupit got the start for the Chiefs before being pulled in favor of Manny Panghli after 47:20. The combo combined to make 33 saves.

Rockets comeback to beat the Royals 4-3 in a shootout

The Kelowna Rockets faced a two-goal deficit in the third period in order to pick up a 4-3 win in the shootout before just 1,704 at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Arena in Victoria.

Jake Poole (11th) opened the scoring for the Rockets with the lone goal in the first period. Bailey Peach (22nd and 23rd) scored twice and Reggie Newman replied for the Royals in the second period to give the Royals a 3-1 lead heading into the third period. Scott Cousins (second) got the Rockets back to within one with an early marker in the final twenty minutes. Mark Liwiski (ninth) scored the tying goal just over halfway through the third to send the game to overtime. Overtime settled nothing. The Rockets shot first in the shootout and Pavel Novak connected on the first shot with the lone goal giving the Rockets the hard fought win.

Talyn Boyko stopped 18 of 21 shots picking up his 14th win of the season (13th with the Rockets). Campbell Arnold Made 33 saves in the loss for the Royals who have now lost their eights straight (0-7-0-1).

Warriors thump Central Division leading Oil Kings 8-1

The Moose Jaw Warriors went a perfect 3-and-0 on their Alberta road trip as they thumped the Edmonton Oil Kings 8-1 before 2,985 at Rogers Place. Despite only having 31 shots on goal, the Warriors were able to dent the twine eight times against the usually stingy Oil Kings.

Brayden Yager led the way for the Warriors with five points on the night (2G-3A, his 19th and 20th of the season). Atley Calvert also scored twice (sixth and seventh) for the Warriors. Daemon Hunt (11th), Majid Kaddoura (third), and Thomas Tien (fourth) rounded out the scoring for the winners. Dylan Guenther replied for the Oil Kings with his 22nd of the season.

Carl Tetachuk picked up his 17th win of the season for the Warriors stopping 23 of 24 Oil Kings shots. Sebastian Cossa got the start for Edmonton stopping 17 of 21 Warriors shots before being replaced by Kolby Hay in the third period who stopped six of ten Warrior shots.

Rebels get back on track with 5-2 win over Broncos

Five different Red Deer Rebels scored in a 5-2 win over the hometown Swift Current Broncos before 1,314 fans at the Innovation Credit Union I-Plex.

Alexei Shanaurin scored first for Broncos just over five minutes into the game with his first career WHL goal. Jayden Grubbe (seventh) and Jace Isley (eighth) scored 40 seconds apart halfway through the first to give the Rebels a lead heading into the first intermission. Josh Davies (11th) scored the lone goal in the second period to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the third frame. The Rebels scored a trio of goals in the third period to seal the contest. Veterans Arshdeep Bains (19th), Ben King (league leading 29th), and Liam Keeler (16th) dented the twine in the third for the winners.

Chase Coward made 27 saves for the Rebels who moved to within four points of the division leading Oil Kings. Reid Dyck stopped 22 of 27 Rebels shots in the loss.

DUB Firsts

Shanaurin scores first goal with Broncos

17-year-old Russian Alexei Shanaurin scored his first career WHL goal as he opened the scoring for the Swift Current Broncos in a 5-2 loss to the Red Deer Rebels. the 6-foot 179 lb. forward was playing in his seventh game for the Broncos.

Weinstein snipes first goal for Chiefs

16-year-old defenseman Saige Weinstein connected with his first career WHL goal for the Spokane Chiefs in an 8-2 loss to the Seattle Thunderbirds. The Edmonton, AB product skated in five games in the shortened 2020-21 season before getting regular duty this season. In his 35 game career he now has five points (1G-4A).

CHL Record for Hauser

Winnipeg ICE goaltender Daniel Hauser set a Canadian Hockey League record going 22 games without losing in regulation (20-0-2-0).

He broke the WHL record that was set by Scott Olson of the Brandon Wheat Kings through 1977-78 and 1978-79 who went 18 games (15-0-3) without a regulation loss.

The CHL record was held by Maurice Barrette of the Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL in 1973 where he won his first 19 games.

DUB Alumni

Five DUB Alumni named to Canada’s Men’s Olympic Team

Five DUB alumni were named to Team Canada’s 25-man roster… Adam Cracknell (Kootenay 2002-06), Jordan Weal (Regina 2007-12), Adam Tambellini (Calgary 2013-15), Landon Ferraro (Red Deer, Everett 2006-2010), and Tyler Wotherspoon (Portland 2008-13) got the call.

Cracknell, is currently with the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL where he has played 28 games picking up 23 points (9G-14A) this season. The veteran forward has played in parts of nine NHL seasons. The Prince Albert, SK forward played his entire four-year DUB career with the ICE where he had 213 points (94G-119A) in 283 games.

After playing parts of five seasons in the NHL, Weal moved overseas to take his talents to the KHL where he’s playing for Ak Bars Kazan. In 36 games he has 30 points (12G-18A). The former DUB star plays his entire career with the Pats where he finished fourth all-time in franchise scoring with 385 points (135G-250A, third all-time in assists) in 282 games.

Tambellini is in his second season with the Rögle BK where he has 35 points in 32 (18G-17A) games for the SHL club. The Edmonton product joined the Hitmen after starting with the University of North Dakota and ended up playing a season and a half with the Hitmen. In 102 games with the Hitmen, he had 125 points (64G-61A).

Ferraro, who is her second season with Kölner Haie of the DEL has 31 points (11G-20A) in 37 games this season. The Trail. BC product played 220 games mostly with the Rebels before ending his WHL career with the Silvertips he had 76 goals and 76 assists.

Another player that comes from the AHL is Wotherspoon who is playing with the Utica Comets of the AHL where he has 10 points (1G-9A) in 28 games. The Surrey, BC defenseman played his entire 239 game DUB career with the Winterhawks where he collected 82 points (17G-65A).

Two DUB alumni named to Germany’s Men’s Olympic Team

Two DUB alumni were named to the Team Germany for the 2022 Men’s Olympic team. Marcel Noebels (Seattle, Portland 2010-12) and Dominik Bittner (Everett 2011-12) were called to represent their country.

Noebels, who has played for Eisbären Berlin since 2014-15 has 45 points (16G-29A) in 39 games for the DEL club this season. In his two seasons in the WHL, the forward played 128 games (mostly with the Thunderbirds before ending his career as a Winterhawk) where he had 112 points (48G-64A).

Bittner a defenseman has played the last three seasons with the Grizzlys Wolfsburg of the DEL. This year he has 11 points (2G-9A) in 35 games. In his lone DUB season with the Silvertips, Bittner had 17 points (4G-13A) in 68 games.

Two DUB alumni also named to the ROC team for the Olympics

Artyom Minulin (Swift Current, Everett 2015-19) and Pavel Karnaukov (Calgary 2014-16) were named to the Russian Olympic Committee Men’s Hockey team for the upcoming Olympics.

The 23-year-old Minulin is now in his third season with the Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL where the defenseman has 13 points (3G-10A) in 46 games. The four-year WHL veteran played his first three seasons with the Broncos before playing his overage year with the Silvertips. In 257 DUB games he had 144 points (27G-117A).

Karnaukov is currently in his fifth season with CSKA Moskova where he has 13 points (7G-6A) in 37 games this season. The 24-year-old forward played both of his DUB seasons with the Hitmen where he skated in 118 games where he scored 32 goals and added 41 assists for 73 points.

Fleury recalled to the Kraken taxi squad

Cale Fleury (Kootenay, Regina 2014-18) was recalled from the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL to the Seattle Kraken’s taxi squad. The 23-year-old is an alternate captain for the Checkers and has 17 points (5G-12A) in 36 games for the Kraken affiliate. He has played 41 games in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens where he has one goal.

The defenseman played the majority of his DUB career with the Ice before he was traded to the Pats for the 2018 Memorial Cup. He played 269 games where he had 127 points (32G-95A).

Froese added to Flames taxi squad

Stockton Heat captain Byron Froese (Everett, Red Deer (2008-11) was recalled to the Calgary Flames taxi squad. In 22 games with the AHL’s Heat, he has 19 points (10G-9A).

Over three seasons in the DUB, two seasons with the Silvertips, and his last with the Rebels,  Froese played 212 games picking up 199 points (91G-108A).

Andrusak acquired by the Cyclones

Zack Andrusiak (Tri-City, Prince Albert, Seattle, Everett 2014-15, 2016-19) was traded by the Idaho Steelheads to the Cincinnati Cyclones. He was the future considerations from a previous trade. With the Steelheads, the Yorkton, SK product has 23 points (9G-14A) in 36 games.

In his DUB career, the left-winger suited up for 202 games notching 80 goals and 69 assists, mostly with the Thunderbirds.

Brkin on the move again

Bailey Brkin (Swift Current, Kootenay, Spokane, Moose Jaw 2016-20) was claimed on waivers by the Orlando Solar Bears from the Rapid City Rush a team he joined on January 11th. In three games with the Rush, he went 2-1-0 with a 2.34 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage.

Over parts of four seasons in the WHL he played 89 games compiling a 44-32-6 record. He had a 3.40 GAA and .898 SV% in his WHL career.
