Winterhawks top the Chiefs in overtime 5-4

The Portland Winterhawks won their third game in three days in a 5-4 OT win over the Spokane Chiefs. Ryan McCleary‘s overtime marker increased the Portland Winterhawks points streak to 11 straight games (10-0-0-1).

Joining McCleary (fourth) in the goal column for the Winterhawks were Gabe Klassen (16th), Jack O’Brien (sixth), Tyson Kozak (20th), and Cross Hanas (12th) who went 2-for-3 on the powerplay. Bear Hughes (12th), Carter Streek (fifth), Erik Atchison (seventh), and Graham Sward (seventh). Sward’s goal with 12 seconds left sent the game to overtime. Hanas added a trio of assists for a four point game.

Overage goaltender Taylor Gauthier won his fifth straight with the Winterhawks stopping 26 of 30 Chiefs shots. Rookie Manny Panghi stopped 32 in the loss for the Chiefs. The boxscore.

Warriors win 3rd straight in victory over the Hitmen

The Moose Jaw Warriors won their third straight contest in a 4-1 win over the Calgary Hitmen in front of 3,580 fans at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Four different Warriors scored in Sunday’s victory. Josh Hoekstra (second) opened the scoring in the first period, Nathan Pilling (fourth) and Majid Kaddoura (second) increased the lead in the second frame. Grayden Siepmann (sixth) replied with just three seconds left in the second period. Cordel Larson (ninth) scored into an empty net with 28 seconds left to make the game 4-1 and seal the deal.

Overage netminder Carl Tetachuk made 30 saves for the Warriors who pick up their 20th win of the season (16th for the goaltender). Brayden Peters stopped 17 of 20 Warrior shots in the loss.Β The boxscore.

Scott recalled to Marlies

Ian Scott (Prince Albert 2015-19) was recalled from the ECHL’s Newfoundland Growlers to the Toronto Marlies (AHL). The goalie from Calgary has made on appearance this season with the Growlers where he played 20 minutes stopping 5 of 6 shots he faced.

In four DUB seasons, all with the Raiders, Scott played in 175 games going 87-64-14 with a 2.90 goals against average and a .905 save percentage. He also helped lead the Raiders to a Memorial Cup appearance in 2019.

McKay sent back to the Fuel

After being recalled from the Indy Fuel on January 15, 2022,Β Riley McKay (Spokane, Saskatoon 2016-20)was returned to the ECHL club by the Rockford IceHogs. In two games with the IceHogs he picked up five penalty minutes.

The Swan River, MB product played four years in the WHL where he played two seasons each with the Chiefs and Blades. In 243 games, McKay had 87 points (38 goals, 49 assists) and 517 PIM.

Olynek signs with Allen

Kolten Olynek (Lethbridge, Moose Jaw, Spokane, Prince Albert, Saskatoon 2012-17) has joined the ECHL’s Allen Americans. The 25-year-old was in his fifth season at the University of Western Ontario (USports) where he had seven points (4G-3A) in six games before signing in the pro’s.

Olynek, a well travelled WHLer played parts of five seasons with five different DUB clubs, starting with the Hurricanes and finishing with the Blades as an overage. He made stops with the Warriors, Chiefs, and Raiders in between the bookends. He had 77 points (32G-45A) in 253 WHL games.

Strand reassigned to Kings taxi squad

Austin Strand (Red Deer, Seattle 2014-18) was reassigned by the Los Angeles Kings to the club’s taxi squad. The 24-year-old defenseman has played with both the Kings and their AHL’s farm team the Ontario Reign. With the Kings, the Calgary product played in a pair of games with no points. With the Reign, he has skated in 16 games collecting five points (2G-3A).

In his four year DUB career split between the Rebels and Thunderbirds he picked up 122 points (40G-82A) in 268 games.
