DUB Trade Deadline

Nine trades were made on Deadline Day

The busiest teams on deadline day were the Vancouver Giants and Kamloops Blazers as they each made a trio of moves. The Regina Pats, Spokane Chiefs, Winnipeg ICE, and Lethbridge Hurricanes each made two deals. The Moose Jaw Warriors, Medicine Hat Tigers, Edmonton Oil Kings, and Saskatoon Blades each had one deal.

Three first-round picks were traded… all to the Giants. The biggest name moved… Justin Sourdif. No goaltenders were traded.

Monday DUB recap

The lone WHL game on Trade Deadline night had the Red Deer Rebels host the Prince Albert Raiders at the Peavey Mart Centrium in Red Deer. Seven different Raiders scored in a 7-3 win over the Rebels in front of 2,418 fans in attendance.

Hayden Pakkala (sixth), Reece Vitelli (12th), Sloan Stanick (14th), Remy Aquilon (third), Landon Kosior (ninth), Evan Herman (14th), and Harrison Lodewyk (first career goal, see below) all scored for the Raiders who went 3-for-6 on the powerplay. Liam Keeler (12th and 13th) and Arshdeep Bains (18th) replied for the Rebels who outshot the Raiders 29-26.

Tikhon Chaika made 26 saves in his 21st appearance for the Raiders and is now 9-7-0-1 with a 2.86 GAA and a .897 SV%. Chase Coward got the start in goal for the Rebels and made 15 saves on 19 shots in 41:42 before being replaced by Connor Ungar who topped four or seven shots in relief.

DUB First

5-ft-10, 178 lb. Harrison Lodewyk notched his first career WHL goal in the Raiders 7-3 win over the Rebels on Monday.

Lodewyk who is from Red Deer just so happened to snipe his hometown. The 16-year-old now has three points (G-2A) in 26 games this year.

DUB Alumni

Seventeen-year-old German forward Moritz Elias has left the Saskatoon Blades to return to his home country to play in the men’s second league.

In 28 games with the Blades, the 5-ft-7 forward had eight points (2G-6A).

Pickard assigned to Red Wings taxi squad

Goaltender Calvin Pickard (Seattle 2008-12)was called up by the Detroit Red Wings to join their taxi squad. The 29-year-old has been playing with the Red Wings AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins.

In 25 games with the Griffins, Pickard has a 12-8-5 record with a 2.31 goals against average and a .930 save percentage.

The four-year WHLer tended goal his entire 241 game career with the Thunderbirds. He had a career 91-120-27 record with 12 shutouts, a 3.29 GAA, and a .909 SV%.

Hughes released by the Komets

Liam Hughes (Edmonton, Seattle, Lethbridge, and Winnipeg 2016-20) was released by the ECHL’s Fort Wayne Komets just 10 days after joining the club. In his brief stay with the Komets.

In three games with the Komets, Hughes went 1-1-1 with a 2.97 GAA and a .891 SV%

Through parts of four seasons in the WHL, Hughes played 102 games. He held a 50-46-12 record with a 3.13 GAA and .906 SV%.

Asuchak signs professional tryout with Checkers

Spencer Asuchak (Tri-City, Prince George 2008-12) has joined the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers on a professional tryout. The Allen Americans captain has played 30 games with the ECHL club notching 29 points (11G-18A).

The 30-year-old who hails from Kamloops, BC played 224 games in the WHL with the Americans and Cougars where he picked up 95 points (49G-46A).

Flodell earns professional tryout with Henderson

Logan Flodell (Seattle, Saskatoon, Swift Current, Lethbridge 2013-18) who joined the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL on December 29, 2021, from Acadia University (USports) has signed a professional tryout with the Henderson Silver Knights of the AHL.

With Acadia, Flodell played 14 games going 4-9-0 with a 3.97 GAA and a .890 SV%. With the Stingrays he has played three games, going 1-2-0 with a 2.37 GAA and .909 SV% and 1 shutout.

The Regina, SK product played 161 games over his WHL career going 86-53-13 with a 2.92 GAA, .908 SV%, and nine shutouts.
