The Memorial Cup dates announced

The Canadian Hockey League announced that the 2022 Memorial Cup will begin on Monday, June 20, 2022, with the Saint John Sea Dogs facing off against the OHL Champion.

Tues., June 21 – Game 2: QMJHL vs. WHL
Wed., June 22 – Game 3: Saint John vs. WHL
Thurs., June 23 – Game 4: QMJHL vs. OHL
Fri., June 24 – Game 5: WHL vs. OHL
Sat., June 25 – Game 6: Saint John vs. QMJHL
Sun., June 26 – Tie-Breaker, if necessary
Mon., June 27 – Semi-Final
Wed., June 29 – Championship Final

All games will be televised on TSN and RDS.

CHL Top 10

Five DUB teams have claimed spots in the CHL Top-10 Rankings for Week 16. The Winnipeg ICE (first), Edmonton Oil Kings (third), Everett Silvertips (fourth), Portland Winterhawks (fifth), and Kamloops Blazers (sixth) all made it into the top six. The Seattle Thunderbirds received an honorable mention in the rankings.

Blazers too strong for Royals in 6-4 win

The Kamloops Blazers were just too strong for the Victoria Royals in a 6-4 victory at the Sandman Centre in Kamloops. The Royals made a game of it, coming back from 2-1, 3-1, and 4-3 leads to tie the game at 4-4. The Blazers sealed the game with a pair of goals just past the midway point of the third in their 6-4 win.

Drew Englot (10th, 11th) scored the winner, and the insurance marker in the third period to give the Blazers the victory. Fraser Minten (15th, 16th) also scored twice for the Blazers while Luke Toporowski (30th) and Dylan Sydor (ninth) rounded out the scoring for the winners. Toporowski now has 24 points (15G-9A) in 13 games with the Blazers. Riley Gannon (12th), Brayden Schuurman (25th), Bailey Peach (29th), and Tarun Fizer (seventh) replied for the Royals who were outshot 42-26 in the loss.

Dylan Garand got the start for the Blazers and stopped 13 of 15 shots before being replaced by Dylan Ernst at the 15:39 mark of the second period after Garand left with a lower-body injury. Ernst picked up the win stopping nine of 11 shots in 24.21. Campbell Arnold stopped 36 of 42 in the Royals loss. The boxscore.

MacAdams hat-trick paces Cougars to 5-2 win over Rockets

Carter MacAdams scored his first career DUB hat-trick and Tyler Brennan stopped 44 shots as the Prince George Cougars beat the hometown Kelowna Rockets 5-2 at Prospera Place in Kelowna.

Cayden Glover opened the scoring at 2:32 of the first period to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead heading into the second period. MacAdams (eighth and ninth) gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead through forty minutes. John Babcock (third) got the Rockets back in the contest at 3-1 before the Cougars added two more as MacAdams (10th) completed his hat-trick and Ethan Samson (10th) gave the Cougars an insurmountable 5-1 lead with just over eight minutes left. Adam Kydd scored a late marker for the Rockets to make the final 5-2.

The win was Brennan’s 10th of the season for the Cougars. Jari Kykkanen stopped 23 of 28 shots in his first career DUB loss. The boxscore.

Warriors hang on to beat Hitmen 3-2

The Moose Jaw Warriors scored once in each period and hung on to a 3-2 win over the Calgary Hitmen before 1,106 fans at the Seven Chiefs Sportsplex in Calgary.

Jagger Firkus (28th) opened the scoring for the Warriors in the first period before Carter Yakemchuk (first career) tied it before the end of the first period. Daemon Hunt (14th) gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead late in the second period. Maximus Wanner (fifth) score early in the third period to give Moose Jaw the 3-1 lead. The Hitmen bombarded the Warriors with 18 shots in the final frame but only Sean Tschigerl (20th) was able to put one by Jackson Unger as the Warriors held on to a 3-2 win.

Unger picked up his seventh win while stopping 38 of 40 shots in the Warrior net. Ethan Buenaventura stopped 27 in the loss for Calgary. The boxscore.

Wheat Kings beat the Tigers 4-1

The Brandon Wheat Kings scored three goals in the third period to put an end to the Medicine Hat Tigers night in a 4-1 win with 1,782 people in attendance at the Co-Op Place in Medicine Hat.

Riley Ginnell (10th) opened the scoring for the Wheat Kings early in the first period before Teague Patton (ninth) tied the contest halfway through the first to send it to the first break tied at 1-1. Neither team was able to et on the scoreboard in the second and headed to the final stanza still tied at 1-1. Chad Nychuk (13th) scored on the powerplay to give the Wheat Kings a 2-1 lead 6:18 into the third period. Nate Danielson (14th) and Nychuk (14th) into an empty net added to the Wheat Kings lead late in the third to seal the 4-1 victory.

Brandon went 1-for-10 on the powerplay while Medicine Hat went 0-for-3.

Ethan Kruger picked up his 17th win of the season after stopping 24 of 25 shots for the Wheat Kings. Garin Bjorklund stopped 37 of 40 Wheat Kings blasts in the loss. The boxscore.

DUB First

Yakemchuk scores first DUB goal

16-year-old Carter Yakemchuk scored his first career goal for the Calgary Hitmen in a 3-2 loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors on Wednesday night. The hometown defenseman took 36 games to dent the twine for the Hitmen and now has eight points (1G-7A) on the season.

Heatherington recalled, Mark Kastelic reassigned in Senators moves

Dillon Heatherington (Swift Current 2010-15) was recalled by Ottawa and with a corresponding move Mark Kastelic (Calgary 2015-20) was sent to Belleville in a series of Senators moves.

Heatherington, a defenseman has been up and down between the two clubs this season. In nine games with the Ottawa version of the Senators, he was held off the scoresheet but collected seven penalty minutes. In Belville, he has nine points (2G-7A) in 21 games.

The Calgary product played his DUB career with the Broncos where he was more known for his defense, he suited up for 247 games collecting 87 points (13G-74A).

Kastelic has suited up for eight games with Ottawa where he has an assist. In 34 games with the Baby Sens, the 22-year-old has 12 points (6G-6A)

He played his full DUB career with the Hitmen where he skated in 321 games collecting 235 points (126G-109A).

Iverson traded to Rush

Keegan Iverson (Portland 2011-2017) was traded by the Indy Fuel to the Rapid City Rush in the ECHL. After starting the season with the Mount Royal University of USports where he played three games. In November Iverson left to join the Indy Fuel of the ECHL where he had three assists in 20 games. He also has a stint with the Ontario Reign (AHL) where he had one assist in a pair of games during his professional tryout.

The 25-year-old Minneapolis product played all 293 of his WHL games with the Winter Hawks where he notched 190 points on 80 goals and 110 assists.

Skinner sent to the Condors

With Mikko Koskinen being taken off the COVID protocol, Stuart Skinner (Lethbridge, Swift Current 2014-18) was returned to the Bakersfield Condors (AHL) by their parent club Edmonton Oilers. He was recalled on February 8th and has been shuttled between the two franchises a few times this season. In 13 games with the Oilers, the Edmonton product has a 6-6-0 record with a 2.62 goals-against average and .913 save percentage. With the Condors, he has an 8-0-2 record in 10 games with a 1.97 GAA and .928 SV%.

He played 207 DUB games (182 with the Hurricanes, 25 with the Broncos) going 104-72-9-6 with a 3.22 GAA, .908 SV%, and 12 shutouts.

Brooks claimed by Leafs

Adam Brooks (Regina 2012-17) was re-claimed by the Toronto Maple Leafs after being placed on waivers by the Vegas Golden Knights. Brooks has been on the move in the 2021-22 season, he played four games with the Montreal Canadiens (one assist) before being acquired by the Golden Knights where he has played in seven contests scoring twice. He has also played five games with Henderson Silver Knights where he had 3 assists when he was on a conditioning loan with the AHL club.

The Winnipeg product played his entire five-year DUB career with the Pats where he played 317 games picking up 335 points (119G-216A) during his tenure with Regina.

Bartosek joins the Pelicans

Patrik Bartosek (Red Deer 2011-14) has signed with the Pelicans Lahti (Liiga in Finland) after his release by Amur Khabarovsk (KHL) whose season was ended. In 11 games with the KHL team, he had a 2-8-1 record with a 2.80 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage. He had played with the Pelicans in 2020-21 before moving on to the KHL, he was named to Team Czechia for the Olympics but did not see any action.

Bartosek played three seasons in the DUB, all with the Rebels winning the CHL goaltender of the year in 2012-13. He played in 145 games he compiled an 80-50-11 record and an outstanding 2.59 goals-against average and .927 save percentage.
