15 DUB players named to the CHL Top Prospects Game

15 DUB players were invited to participate in the 2022 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Kitchener, ON on March 23, 2022.

Swift Current, Kamloops, and Seattle each have three players invited to participate.

Goalies (3): Mason Beaupit (Spokane), Tyler Brennan (Prince George), and Reid Dyck (Swift Current).

Defense (4): Kevin Korchinski (Seattle), Mats Lindgren (Kamloops), Denton Mateychuk (Moose Jaw), and Owen Pickering (Swift Current).

Forwards (8): Josh Filmon (Swift Current), Jagger Firkus (Moose Jaw), Conor Geekie (Winnipeg), Jordan Gustafson (Seattle), Fraser Minten (Kamloops), Matthew Savoie (Winnipeg), Reid Schaefer (Seattle), and Matthew Seminoff (Kamloops).

Thunderbirds extend streak to five with 4-1 win over Americans

The Seattle Thunderbirds outshot the Tri-City Americans 47-16 in a 4-1 home ice win at accesso ShoWare Center in Kent, WA. 2,506 watched on as the Thunderbirds opened up a 3-0 lead through 51 minutes before the Americans replied. An empty netter sealed the 4-1 game with 35 seconds left in the game.

Jared Davidson (23rd), Sam Popowich (sixth), Jordan Gustafson (18th), and Henrik Rybinski (18th) scored for the victorious T-Birds. Marc Lajoie replied with his seventh for the Americans.

Thomas Milic made 15 saves to pick up his 18th win for the Thunderbirds. Tomas Suchanek stopped 43 of 46 shots directed his way in the loss. The boxscore.

Winterhawks back to winning ways with 4-2 victory over Chiefs

Fresh off of having their 18-game point streak (17-0-0-1) and 11-game winning streak snapped by the Spokane Chiefs, the Portland Winterhawks are back to their winning ways with a 4-2 win in Spokane.

Four different Winterhawks scored for the winners with Nick Chyzowski (ninth) opening the scoring in the first period. Raegan Wiles (sixth) got the Chiefs on even terms early in the second period. Marcus Nguyen (12th) gave Portland the 2-1 lead heading into the second intermission. Tyson Kozak (24th) and Clay Hanus scored in the opening 11 minutes of the third period to give the Winterhawks a 4-1 lead. Jake Gudelj (first career) scored with 11 seconds left to make the score more respectable at 4-2.

Overage goalie Taylor Gauthier remained perfect since his acquisition from the Cougars stopping 26 of 28 shots which moved him to 11-0-0-0 with a 1.36 goals-against average and .953 save percentage. 2005-born Cooper Michaluk made his second career start stopping 35 of 39 shots directed his way. Hurricanes beat Warriors 1-0 in a shootout

In a rare feat in the DUB, neither the Lethbridge Hurricanes nor the Moose Jaw Warriors were able to score during regulation or in overtime in a 1-0 Hurricanes win. The only player to score was Yegor Klavdiev who was Lethbridge’s fourth shooter in the breakaways for the Hurricanes.

2,534 fans at the Enmax Centre watched as both Bryan Thomson and Carl Tetachuk picked up shutouts in the game. Thomson picked up his 12th win of the season making 30 stops and not allowing any of the four shooters to score in the shootout. Tetachuk stopped 33 shots and 3-of-4 in the shootout taking the loss. Wheat Kings victorious over Broncos 3-2 in OT

The visiting Brandon Wheat Kings took a 3-2 overtime win over the Swift Current Broncos before 1,385 at the Innovation Credit Union i-plex.

Ridly Greig opened and closed the scoring for the Wheat Kings scoring his 22nd at 11:19 of the second period and at 45 seconds of the extra period. Quinn Mantei scored his first career DUB goal at 12:15 of the second period which gave the Wheat Kings a 2-0 lead. Carter Stebbings (fifth) and Josh Davies (13th) replied for the Broncos which actually knotted the game up at 2-2. Greig then finished the game off in overtime.

2001-born Ethan Kruger stopped 18 of 20 shots directed his way as he moved to 16-8-2-2 on the season for the Wheat Kings. Fellow overage netminder Isaac Poulter stopped 22 of 25 shots in the loss for the Broncos. The boxscore.

Gudelj scores first DUB goal for Chiefs

16-year-old Jake Gudelj scored his first career DUB goal for the Spokane Chiefs with 11 seconds left in a 4-2 loss to the Portland Winterhawks. The forward from North Vancouver, BCnow has two points (1g-1a) in 32 games for the Chiefs.

Mantei notches first DUB goal for Wheat Kings

16-year-old defenseman Quinn Mantei scored his first career DUB goal for the Brandon Wheat Kings in a 3-2 OT win. His goal at 12:09 of the second period gave the Wheat Kings a 2-0 lead. In 35 games, the Weyburn, SK product has three points (1G-2A).

Gally joins Everblades

Dalton Gally (Medicine Hat, Kelowna 2016-19) has signed with the ECHL’s Florida Everblades. The 24-year-old Alaskan started the season with McGill University (USports) he has three assists in seven games.

The 6-ft-5 defensive defenseman started his DUB career where he started with the Tigers before finishing with the Rockets. In 194 games, Gally had 31 points (3G-28A).

Brooks waived by Golden Knights

Adam Brooks (Regina 2012-17) was waived by the Vegas Golden Knights. Thus far in the 2021-22 season, Brooks played four games with the Montreal Canadiens (one assist) before being acquired by the Golden Knights where he has played in seven contests scoring twice. He has also played five games with Henderson Silver Knights where he had 3 assists when he was on a conditioning loan with the AHL club.

The Winnipeg product played his entire five-year career with the Pats where he played 317 games picking up 335 points (119G-216A) during his tenure with Regina.

Shinkaruk joins HV71

Hunter Shinkaruk (Medicine Hat 2010-14) has signed a contract with HV71 Jönköping (Sweden, HockeyAllsvenskan) after his release by mutual agreement by KHL’s Dinamo Riga. In 35 games with Dinamo Riga, he had 13 points (5G-8A). He was the 24th overall pick by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2013 NHL Draft.

The Calgary product played 211 career DUB games where he picked up 235 points (105G-130A) all played with the Tigers where he was the captain his last two seasons.

Thompson recalled by Vegas

Logan Thompson (Brandon 2014-18) was recalled by the Vegas Golden Knights from the Silver Knights. The 24-year-old goalie from Calgary has played a majority of the 2021-22 season with the Golden Knights AHL affiliate in Henderson where he has played 24 games going 13-8-4 with a 2.67 GAA and .925 SV% with a pair of shutouts. In his lone appearance with Vegas, he is 0-1-0 with a 3.23 GAA and .885 SV%

He played his entire 122 game DUB career with the Wheat Kings going 63-41-10 with a 3.26 GAA, .905 SV%, and 4 shutouts for the Manitoba club.

Darzins retires from the Latvian Nation team

Lauris Darzins (Kelowna 2004-06) has announced his retirement from the Latvian National Team after playing 150 games with the club over his career where he served as captain at the 2022 Olympics.

The forward has been playing with Dinamo Riga since 2013-14 where he has been the team captain for multiple seasons. This season the 36-year-old has 18 points (3G-15A) in 36 games. He played two seasons in the DUB, both with the Rockets where he had 67 points (32G-35A) in 100 games.
