More postponements due to capacity issues

The following four (4) WHL Regular Season games have been postponed due to capacity issues in the province of Manitoba and will be rescheduled:

Friday, February 4: Medicine Hat at Brandon

Saturday, February 5: Moose Jaw at Brandon and Medicine Hat at Winnipeg

Sunday, February 6: Medicine Hat at Winnipeg

Schedule change for Warriors and Tigers

Like the Tweet says: Originally scheduled for Sunday, March 20 at Co-op Place in Medicine Hat, the Tigers will now host the Warriors on Saturday, February 5.

Leslie officially named Broncos GM

Chad Leslie had the interim tag removed from his title and was named the ninth general manager in Swift Current Broncos’ history.

The Elkhorn, MB product was named the interim general manager following the resignation of Dean Brockman on October 14. He had been serving as the assistant GM since the beginning of the 2020-21 season and was the Broncos Director of Scouting for two years prior to that.

“Since Chad came to the organization, he has shown an aptitude for identifying skill,” said Broncos Board Chair Trent McCleary in a Broncos release. “Dean thought very highly of him when he brought him on, and he’s come a long way since he first joined the team. It’s another step in his development and he’s earned the opportunity to be the general manager of the club.”

Cardona signs with the Americans

Seventh overall pick in the 2021 US Priority Draft, Camerin Cardona signed with the Tri-City Americans back on January 28. The 5-11 and 165-lb. left-winger is from Anaheim, CA, and currently plays with the Anaheim Jr. Ice Dogs 15U AAA. He has scored 34 goals and assisted on 12 others in 34 games in 2021-22.

Cougars recall pair for upcoming games

The Prince George Cougars have recalled a pair of prospects to serve as affiliated players for their upcoming games. 2006-born Hunter Laing and 2005-born Zackary Shantz have gotten the call for Prince George. Both players have appeared in one game for the Cougars earlier in the season.

Laing plays at Rink Hockey Academy U16 in Kelowna where he has 30 points (14G-16A) in 22 games. He has also skated in two games for the Rink U18 games where he was held off the scoresheet.

Shantz plays with the Northern Alberta Xtreme U18 Prep in the CSSHL where he has played 20 games collecting 44 points (16G-28A). He has also played one game in the AJHL with the Spruce Grove Saints where he was held pointless.

DUB Player of the Week

Blazers captain Logan Stankoven has been on a tear as of late. In his last four contests, he has 13 points (5G-8A). The 18-year-old center has 56 points (23G-33A) in 31 games which is good for fourth overall in the DUB scoring race.

DUB Goalie of the Week

The Winterhawks Taylor Gauthier was named the WHL goalie of the week for the second time in January. In two games this week, Gauthier won both his games collecting a 0.50 goals against average and .977 save percentage.

Since his acquisition from the Cougars, the overage goalie from Calgary is 7-0-0-0 with a 1.70 GAA and .945 SV%. Overall this season, he is 14-5-0-0 with a 2.38 GAA and .930 SV%.

Smith joins the Silverbacks

Zack Smith (Regina 2019-22) joined the Salmon Arm Silverbacks of the BCHL for the remainder of the season. The right-winger out of Saskatoon, SK missed much of the season with a lower-body injury. In 14 games with the Pats, the overage forward had 10 points (2G-8A).

In 85 games with the Pats over three DUB seasons, Smith had 44 points (21G-23A).

Kastelic makes NHL debut with Sens

Mark Kastelic (Calgary 2015-20) made his NHL debut on Saturday in a 2-1 loss to the visiting Anaheim Ducks. He played 6:22 and went -1 in the loss. In 31 games with the Baby Sens the 22-year-old has 11 points (5G-6A)

He played his full DUB career with the Hitmen where he skated in 321 games collecting 235 points (126G-109A).

Kastelic, Thomson returned to taxi squad, Reinhardt recalled to taxi squad

Fresh off making his NHL debut, Mark Kastelic was returned to Ottawa’s taxi squad. Lassi Thomson has been shuttled between the Ottawa Senators, Belville Senators, and their taxi squad multiple times this year.

Second-year pro Cole Reinhardt (Brandon 2016-20) has been recalled to the Ottawa Senators taxi squad from the Belville Senators. In 31 games with the AHL club the Irma, AB product has 13 points (5G-8A).

In four DUB seasons, Reinhardt had 141 points (75G-66A) in 252 games played, all with the Wheat Kings.

Brinkman loaned to White Hawks

Jonathan Brinkman (Medicine Hat 2019-20) signed a one-year extension with the Rødovre Mighty Bulls in Denmark. Once he signed the extension he was loaned out to the Frederikshavn White Hawks of the same league to join his brother Sebastian. The 20-year-old forward has 13 points (3G-10A) in 29 games.

Mighty Bulls director said of the agreements with Brinkman: “We are really happy that Jonathan is ready for one more season in the Rødovre jersey. He is an exciting young player who has made a positive impression on us with good energy and development. So that Jonathan has also been really happy to be here and the interest in continuing the collaboration was mutual, has been really positive.”

Brinkman played one season in the DUB with the Tigers as an 18-year-old where he had 27 points (13G-14A) in 56 games.

Plihal joins Regensburg

38-year-old Tomas Plihal (Kootenay 2001-03) joined the Eisbären Regensburg in the Oberliga (Germany3). He had been playing for HC Jablonec nad Nisou in the 2. liga (Czechia3). The forward had 29 points (14G-15A) in 21 games for Jablonec nad Nisou.

In his two DUB seasons, he played 139 games with the Ice where he averaged 1.17 points per game with 163 (67G-96A) winning the Memorial Cup in 2002.

Soumelidis signs with Kometa Brno B

Stathis Soumelidis (Everett 2012-13) has officially joined the HC Kometa Brno B of the 2. liga (Czechia3). Soumelidis has yet to play in 2021-22. He had previously been playing in the SPHL with the Macon Whoopee where he played 25 games and had nine points (2G-7A) in 2020-21.

Soumelidis then an 18-year-old center, played one season with the Silvertips where he had 11 points (4G-7A) in 67 games.

Duda loaned to Vsetin

43-year-old Radek Duda (Regina, Lethbridge 1998-2000) was loaned to VHK Vsetin of 1. liga (Czechia2) from the HC Benatky nad Jizerou also of the 1. liga. In 15 games with Benatky he has 13 points (6G-7A). He is currently in his 21st professional season mostly in Czechia.

He played two seasons in the DUB, his first with the Pats before being traded to the Hurricanes. in 134 games he had 161 points (66G-95A).

Kohler joins Ajoie

Gilian Kohler (Kootenay 2017-19) signed a two-year pact with Ajoie of the Swiss National League. He had started the season with EHC Biel-Bienne where he played 34 games collecting five points (1G-4A).

The 21-year-old Kohler played 55 games in his first DUB season with the Ice before suiting up for one in his final year. In 56 games he had 20 points (8G-12A).

Jeri-Leon released by Abbotsford

Keltie Jeri-Leon (Tri-City, Kamloops, Lethbridge, Seattle 2016-21) was released from his professional tryout with the Abbotsford Canucks of the AHL. He played four games with the Canucks where he was held off the scoresheet. He had an earlier tryout with the Providence Bruins (AHL) where he scored once in two games. He will return to the Maine Mariners (ECHL) where he has 13 points (5G-8A) in 23 games.

The now 22-year-old was a five-year DUB veteran who played with four different teams, his final 2.5 seasons were his best with the Thunderbirds. in 250 games he collected 110 points (58G-52A)

Harsch signs pro tryout with Abbotsford

Reece Harsch (Seattle, Saskatoon, Winnipeg 2015-20) has signed a professional tryout with the Abbotsford Canucks in the AHL. The 23-year-old defenseman had been playing at the University of Manitoba where he had 12 points (2G-10A) in 14 games.

The Grande Prairie, AB product started his DUB career with the Thunderbirds before being moved to the Blades as a 19-year-old. He finished his career with the ICE as an overage. Not known as an offensive defenseman, Harsch collected 83 points (20G-63A) in 240 league games.
