WHL hands out monthly awards
The WHL named the winners of the rookie, player, and goaltender of the month for April on Tuesday.

Prince Albert Raiders’ forward Aliaksei Protas has been named the rookie of the month for April. Protas recorded nine goals and two assists in 12 games in the month of April. That includes back-to-back hat-tricks to help his team clinch a spot in the WHL Final. Protas has also been named the CHL Player of the Week for the week ending April 28 with six goals and one assist, including those back-to-back hat-tricks.

Vancouver Giants defenseman Bowen Byram is taking home player of the month honours for April. The 2019 NHL Draft Eligible prospect had four goals and six assists in April for the Giants, including four multi-point games. This is Byram’s second time winning the award this season as he won it in January 2019 as well.

Raiders goaltender Ian Scott has been named the WHL Goaltender of the Month for the third time this season. In April, Scott had an 8-3-1 record with a 1.88 goals-against-average and a .934 save percentage with three shutouts.
Bantam draft eligible Brisson headed to NCAA?

Carson Brisson, who played this season for the Leduc Oil Kings Bantam AAA, has committed to the University of Denver. The 15-year-old, who had been projected to go in the first two rounds of Thursday’s bantam draft, had 18 goals and 19 assists in 37 games for Leduc this year. He is the sixth high-end player to commit to an NCAA school, the most notable being Brisson’s potential future teammate Matthew Savoie.
Panther sign Driedger to a two-year contract extension

The Florida Panthers have signed goaltender Chris Driedger (170 GP with the Tri-City Americans and Calgary Hitmen) to a two-year contract extension. The 24-year-old from Winnipeg Manitoba split this season between the Springfield Thunderbirds of the AHL and the Manchester Monarchs of the ECHL. Driedger has also suited up for a handful of games with the NHL’s Ottawa Senators since turning pro.
Capitals place Kammerer on unconditional waivers

The Washington Capitals have placed Maximillian Kammerer on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract. The 22-year-old German played 40 games in the WHL for the Regina Patas and had one goal and two assists.
