Regina Pats weekly wrap 2

 

The Pats went 1-2-1-0 in the first week of the 2020-21 season and were looking to improve in week two. The second week went much like the first for the Pats as they replicated week one and now sit with a 2-4-2-0 record.

Game 5

The Brandon Wheat Kings took a 2-0 lead midway through the second period on a Ben McCartney goal. Lynden McCallum scored in the first for Brandon.

With less than two minutes left in the period the Pats rookie phenom, Connor Bedard stole the puck at the Pats blueline. He took the puck on a clear-cut breakaway and ripped a shot past Wheat King goalie Ethan Kruger. Ryker Evans tied the game with a powerplay marker in the third.

The game needed overtime. Kyle Walker was bumped and then knocked down well away from the play. Nolan Ritchie picked up the puck and scored the 3-2 winner past Pats goalie Roddy Ross.

Game 6

The Winnipeg ICE were up next for the Pats and it was not a good outcome for the Queen City Kids.

Before the game was 90 seconds old, the ICE were on the board as Mike Ladyman scored his first of the season. Jakin Smallwood gave the ICE a 2-0 lead until Carter Massier got the Pats on the board before the first 20 minutes were up.

The Pats then gave up the next five goals to trail 7-1 after 47 minutes. Owen Pederson, Smallwood (his second), Connor McClennon, Chase Bertholet, and Zachary Benson were the ICE goal scorers. Carter Chorney and Logan Nijhoff scored to make the score a bit more respectable at 7-3. McClennon scored his second of the game with under five minutes, ending any talk of a Pats comeback. The ICE won 8-3.

Game 7

The Pats went back to Matthew Kieper in goal and the move paid off against the Prince Albert Raiders.

Carson Denomie scored his seventh goal of the season with less than a minute left in the first period to give the Pats a one-goal lead heading into the intermission.

Remy Aquilon got the Raiders on the board before Braxton Whitehead and Cole Carrier gave the Pats a 3-1 lead after the second period.

Carter Massier and Layton Feist added to the Pats lead making it 5-1 before the midway point of the period. Eric Pearce and Landon Kosior added a pair of goals late in the third but it was not enough as the Pats won 5-3.

Game 8

Spencer Welke made his first appearance of the season. He got the starting assignment against the high-powered Saskatoon Blades.

Saskatoon scored just over 90 seconds into the first period and connected three more times for a four-goal first period. Blake Stevenson, Brandon Lisowsky, and Colton Dach scored before the Pats’ Connor Bedard got them on the board to make it 3-1. Caiden Daley scored the Blades fourth goal.

The Pats finally got into the contest when Logan Nijhoff and Carter Chorney scored in the first half of the second period to make it a 4-3 game. Dach scored his second to give the Blades a 5-3 lead heading into the third.

Saskatoon was relentless in the third period and added two more goals for a 7-3 win. Chase Wouters scored both of the Blades’ third-period goals.

Bedard is still streaking

The exceptional player from North Vancouver is on a tear to start his Regina Pats career. He has a point in each one of his eight games. He leads the Pats in scoring with 13 points (6G, 7A). Bedard currently leads the league in rookie scoring and is among the top ten in league scoring.

Evans leading the defense

With higher expectations and more responsibility, Ryker Evans has really stepped up to lead the Pats’ defensive corps. The Calgary product has put up a point per game so far in the 2020-21 season with eight points (1G, 7A) in eight games.
