In a sad day for hockey fans in Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest, the Western Hockey League announced the cancellation of the remainder of the 2019-2020 regular-season schedule.
There were 54 games remaining on the schedule, with several teams only having four games remaining on their road to the playoffs.
The WHL’s statement reads as such:
“The WHL takes the safety of our players, officials, staff, fans, and everyone associated with the WHL very seriously,” commented WHL Commissioner Ron Robison. “Given the ongoing public health developments regarding COVID-19, we deemed it necessary to cancel the remaining games on the 2019-20 WHL Regular Season Schedule.
“We will continue to monitor ongoing public health developments regarding COVID-19. We will make every effort possible to conduct the 2020 WHL Playoffs at a later date. We thank WHL fans and partners for your patience and understanding during these challenging times.”
That means that the WHL also needed to amend its final standings. The Portland Winterhawks are awarded the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy as winners of the WHL Regular Season, by virtue of having one more point than the Everett Silvertips in the same number of games. This also means that should the WHL be able to conduct the playoffs, the Seattle Thunderbirds are the final Western Conference seed.
